WiTNESEES I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM KAHN, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR OF ONF-HALF TO HEILBRONNER COPIERBUOHER FABRIK O. HOLZWARTH,.
OF HEILBRONN, GERMANY.
LETTER-PRESS BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,729, dated May 10, 1898.
Application filed September 15,1897. Serial No. 651,734. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, ABRAHAM KAHN, of Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany, have invented newand useful Improvements in Copying-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a folding copyingbook which may be used without a press.
Instead of the copying-book which can only be used in connection with a copying-press there have hitherto been available only various kinds of copying-rolls which are not very suitable for use for many purposes by reason of their small circumference, their trou- I 5 blesome manipulation, the looseness of their sheets, &c.
The present invention relates to a modifi cation of the ordinary copying-book such that it can take a convenient shape for packing,
that the labor of copying is somewhat facilitated, and that it is capable of being used in the press when desired. The copying-bookdiffers in external shape from known forms only in that the two side covers of the binding, instead of being stiff, are made with a central break, consisting in the case of the side cover, which is inside when the book is folded, of a hinge connection of the two parts of the cover, which allows these parts to lie close upon each other when folded. The
break of the other cover consists of a flexible piece which connects the two halves and is of length equal to the circumference of the rounded bend on the outside of the folded book.
Figure 1 is a front view of the book when opened out. Fig. 2 is an edge view of it.
Fig. 3 is a plan of it opened out, and Fig. 4 is a plan showing it folded.
In the drawings, A represents the book, having the hinged covers ah, the hinged cover (I. having a long break 0/ intermediate of its length and the cover I) having a short break 19 intermediate of its length, which short break is preferably a hinge connection. 5 On folding the book there is first produced a result similar to that which occurs with the ordinary copying-rolls, as in consequence of the roundness at the fold and of the shifting of the sheets relatively to one another the smooth lay of the moistened blotting-paper is insured and-the tension resulting from the bending produces a certain amount of impression on the sheets. When the book is folded, its surface area is so reduced that the pressure of the hands on it when laid upon a table or plate is equivalent to double the pressure that could be applied to the book when open. This pressure on the folded book is found to be quite sufficient to produce good copies. p
The convenience of the folded book for packing is obvious, rendering it possible to pack the book together with ink, pen, and other writing materials in a box of comparatively small size.
Now what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A copying-book having hinged covers, one cover having a short break therein and the other cover having a ldng flexible break therein, substantially as described.
. 2. A folding copying-book having leaves contained between covers, one of said covers having a break whereby it can be folded upon 7 5 itself and the other of the said covers having a long flexible break a embracing the bend of the folded leaves when the bookis folded.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABRAHAM KAHN.
