COPY-BOOK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELI H. RoUDEBUsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Copy-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to copybooks used for instruction in the art of writing, and in music, drawing, or any subject needing copy, and comprising suitable covers for holding the copy and the writing paper.

The object of my invention is to provide a suitable arrangement of the covers and copy support, whereby the copy may be held by the covers during practice in a most convenient position; also to improve generally upon such copybooks, especially in points of economy in manufacture and convenience of form.

My invention comprises an arrangement of covers and copy-tablet whereby the sheets of the copy-tablet may be held at the edge of the upper cover farthest away from the writer in an inclined position so as to be in a plane substantially rightangles to the line of vision and yet be supported by the copybook; and it further consists of the parts, improvements, and combinations herein set forth and described.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of. this specification, I have illustrated my invention in some of its preferred forms, and have shown the best mode of applying the principles thereof; but it is to be understood that I do not confine my invention to the exact forms described herein or shown in the drawings, and that I contemplate changes in form, proportions, materials, the transposition of parts, and the substitution of equivalent members, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure l is a side or edge view of a copybook made in accordance with the principle of my invention, the book being closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the book shown in Fig. l, but with the copy-tablet turned back to expose the matter to be copied. Fig. 3 is 'a to 3 view of the copybook shown in Fig. l; an Fig. 4 is a view of the same form, open, exposing the inner sides. Figs. 5 and are views corresponding to Figs. 3 and 4, respectively of a further moditication of my invention, in which a pocket is provided for holding the various sheets to be associated with my copybook.

1 is a sheet of suitable material, of proper shape and size and foldable at 2, approximately 'half way between its ends, to form two cover sheets. I prefer to make the sheet of stiff and strong Manila paper eight inches wide and eleven and one-half inches long. This, folded as indicated, makes the covers eight by tive and three-quarters inches.

Referring to the form shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and -la 3 isa copy-tablet stapled at one end to the end of the inner face of one of the covers, the loose ends of the copy-tablet sheets extending toward the fold 2. The inscriptions to be copied are to be on the under side of each sheet, such underside being the exposed side when the sheets are turned back as shown in Fig. -t is a writing tablet stapled at one end to the end of the outer face of the other cover, the

loose ends of the writing-tablet sheets exlet and the cover to which the copy-tablet is attached, they will be pinched und held securely, thus preventing their slipping out while the book is carried or handled. rlhe space is indicated by the numeral T in Figs. l and 2.

rl`o use the copybook, of the form shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, for writing or for practice. the sheets otl the copy-tablet are to be turned back, as shown in F ig. 2. the crease or fold being at 5; and the end of the opposite cover is laid down on the sheets which are turned back, to hold them in that position. It is to be observed that the end of the opposite cover sheet should slightly overlap the crease or fold 5, and the extent of the overlapping depends of course upon the angle at which it is desired to hold the copy, the stitt'ness of the paper, etc.. and it may be adjusted b v the fold 2 to make the overlap greater or less. In a copybook of the kind and size described, I find an overlap of about one-sixteenth of an inch tobe about right, as it will then hold the copy directly in the line of vision at a proper angle. There is also to be considered the item of economy 1 of desk space, both writing-tablet and copytablet being supported solely by the folded COVGIS.

The sheets of the writing' tablet may be perforated along their upper edge, as at 10, so as to be readily detachable, one at a time, as they are used.

It is a feature of these two forms of my invention that the covers may be made from sheets of paper with straight edges, no diecut sheets are used, nor are there pockets to be pasted.

Referring to the form shown in Figs. and 6: In this arrangement, I provide for a pocket 1O formed by an elongation of the cover opposite the copy-tablet turned in upon the cover and secured by means of flaps 13, 13 formed from the edges of the cover sheet. In this form I do not use the writing tablet secured to the back of the cover sheet, as in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4t, but contemplate that the writing sheets may be held loosely between the cover sheets and in the pocket 12, where may also be held the blotter, the specimen sheets, and other loose sheets. But in this form, as in the other forms, I still adhere to the feature of the n copy-support folded to the cover sheet, with the opposite cover sheet of a proper length to overlap slightly the fold or crease, for the purpose of holding back the copy.

What I claim is:

1. A copybook comprising the combination of a folded cover' sheet, a copy-tablet fastened at one end to the inner face of the end of one member of said cover sheet, and a writing-tablet fastened to the outer face of the end of the other member; the free ends of the sheets of each tablet extending toward the fold of the cover sheet, the sheets of the copy-tablet being foldable backward and the end of the opposite member carrying the writing tablet being adapted slightly to overlap the fold, substantially as set forth.

2. A copybook comprising the combination of a folded cover sheet, a copy-tablet fastened to the inside of one member of said cover sheet, and a writing-tablet fastened to l f the outside of the other member;` the parts being so arranged that when the copybook is closed with a sheet of the copy-tablet turned back, the opposite member will overlap the crease or fold of the sheet so turned back and hold it in that position.

3. A copybook comprising the combination of a cover sheet folded to forni the two covers of the copybook; a copy-tablet stapled I at its upper edge to the upper en d and on the inner side of one of said covers and the leaves of said tablet being free at their lower end and adapted to be turned vback on a vfold along their upper edge; and av writingtablet stapled at its upper edge to the upper A end and on the outer side of the other of said covers; said covers and tablets being so adjusted that when a leaf of the copytablet is turned backward on its fold or crease, the upper edge of the Writing-tablet will slightly overlap said crease or fold and thus hold said leaf in its back-turned position.

4. In a copy-book, the combination of two cover leaves folded together, a copy-tablet fastened on the inside of one member of said cover, the sheets of the copy-tablet being fastened together at their outer edge and adjacent to the free end of the opposite cover member and their inner edges being free whereby said sheets may be folded back at said fastening and be slightly overlapped at the fold by the free end of the opposite member of said cover.

5. In a copybook, the combina-tion of two cover leaves folded together, a copy-tablet fastened thereto and locatedl on the inside of one of the cover leaves, the sheets of the copy-tablet being fastened together on a line adjacent to the free end of the opposite cover leaf so that when said. leaves are turned back along said line of fastening, said opposite cover leaf will slightly overlap the fold on which said leaves are turned hack.
