' G. E. MATTHEWS.
IlrIE 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. MATTHEWS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK..
CALENDAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of ALetters Patent No. 498,069, dated May 23, 1893. Application filed May 25, 1892. Serial No. 434,312. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to figures of reference marked thereon, which form open.
form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to calendars, pricelists and other analogous articles of two or more registering leaves adapted for suspension upon a wall, desk, bracket, dac., and the object of my invention is to so construct such calendar or other article, that when suspended, the subject matter printed, engraved or otherwise placed upon its several pages, can be displayed at the individual page to be inspected, while the calendar or other article remains securely closed as to its other leaves or pages. To accomplish my object I preferably take a series of sheets of paper or other suitable material and bind them by saddlestitch or otherwise, so that one half can be folded over closely and compactly upon the other. Upon the several registering pages of the sheets so folded I arrange the proper subject matter and then perforate the sheets at one or more points upon the loose edges or corners thereof, opposite to or away from the folded or bound portion for the purpose of suspension. i
In the drawings I have preferably shown a calendar embodying my invention in which- Figure l represents my improved calendar in closed suspended position. Fig. 2 represents the same calendar with the lirst leaf turned down. Fig. 3 represents a modified Fig. 4 represents the calendar shown inFig. 3 as closed and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of Fig. 4.
In the case of the calendar 1, represented in the drawings the sheets forming the same arebound or united at the central line 2, forming the consecutive pages 3, 4, 5, ctc.: upon which are printed, engraved or otherwise placed the months of January, February, March,.&c., as shown, together with the year and any ornamentation which fancy may suggest'. Through a corner on the series of registering leaves are punched the perforations v6, adapted for the reception of a hook, nailor other carrying device as shown' at 7. (See Fig. 5.) y
The manipulation of the calendar to show the month desired is obvious as well as the fact that when the calendar is in use ina state of suspension its leaves are held securely closed as clearly shown in Fig. 5. If desired the calendar'may be suspended from one of its edges as in Figs. 3 and 4 by means of the central perforations 8, or side perforations 9, it being seen that in the case of both styles shown, the points of suspension are opposite to or away from the line of junction of the several sheets and at or near their free corners or edges, thus eectually insuring the holding together of the leaves of the calendar when suspended. The central perforations l0, upon the sides adjacent to the line of junction might be used for suspension in case of the employment of sti material, but I prefer the other methods herein shown. Sheets containing price lists or any subject matter to which constant reference is needed may obviously be arranged in the same manner.
Instead offfolded sheets as shown separate leaves of uniform size may be suitably secured together without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- A calendar or other analogous article consisting of two or more sheets or leaves bound or otherwise secured along one side orset of registering edges and provided with registering perforations for suspension at the free corners or edges opposite to or away from'the line of junction of the several sheets for the purpose stated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. MATTHEWS.
