PERPETUAL CALENDAR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI W. DOOLITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Perpetual Calendar, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to perpetual calendars designed to be supported upon a wall, table, desk or the like and having shiftable hingedly mounted leaves thereon arranged in a novel manner and whereby the name and the number of the day and the name of the month appearing upon the calendar can be changed at will.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which is simple and compact in construction, and which is provided with three sets of leaves, one of said sets carrying numerals ranging from 1 to 9 inclusive, while the remaining sets each contain a series of numerals, the numerals in each set being each formed by the cooperation of two leaves.
A further object is to provide an arrangement of leaves whereby, when a double number is exposed, the leaves on which the single numbers are displayed will be concealed from view.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a calendar embodying the present invention, one of the central leaves being partly raised out of normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the leaves arranged to disclose a double number.
Referring to the figures'by characters of reference, 1 designates the body of the de vice, the same being provided preferably at its lower edge with a rearwardly extending base 2 constituting means for supporting the body in an inclined position upon a table, desk or the like, or for holding the lower portion of the body spaced from a wall or other structure from which the device may be suspended.
The body and base are preferably formed in a single piece of light material such, for example, an aluminum and the said body is provided in the center of the front face with a rectangular recess 3 having outstanding loops 4; therein and arranged along the horizontal center. These loops extend through apertures 5 formed within leaves 6 formed of aluminum or other suitable stiff light material. Each leaf has one-half of a numeral printed or otherwise displayed thereon and the said leaves are so arranged that when two adjoining leaves are exposed, a complete numeral will be formed thereby, the meeting edges of the two leaves extending through the center of the exposed numeral. The arrangement of the leaves is such that when all of them are located below and suspended from the loops 4, the exposed face of the front leaf will contain the lower portion of the numeral 9, said portion registering with the upper portion of said numeral appearing upon the inner wall of the recess 3. Should all of the leaves be swung upwardly into position above the loops 4, the outer face of the front leaf would disclose the upper portion of the numeral 1, and said portion would register with the lower portion of the numeral 1 which appears on the inner wall of the recess 3. Should, one or more of the leaves be positioned above the loops 4 and the remaining ones below said loops, the front faces of the upper and lower leaves would always cooperate to expose a complete numeral, these numerals ranging from 2 to 8 inclusive.
As shown at 7 in Fig. 1, recesses may be formed in the upper and lower walls of the central recess 3 so as to receive the end of the finger used in manipulating the leaves.
Arranged in vertical alinement on each side of the recess 3 is a series of loops 8. The loops located at the left of recess 3 project through openings 9 formed in leaves 10, each of which is made of aluminum or other like stifl material. Each leaf contains onehalf of a numeral upon each face. For example, two leaves are necessary to disclose the complete numeral 2 upon the front faces thereof, but the back face of the left one of said leaves contains one-half of the numeral 1 while the back face of the other leaf contains one-half of the numeral 3. It will be apparent therefore that if the leaf carrying the right half of the numeral 2 be turned to the left, it will display one-half of the numeral 8 and this half will register with the remainder of the numeral appearing upon the exposed face of the body 1. The same is also true of the numeral 1 which is exposed by turning the left leaf of the complete numeral 2 to the right. It is designed to mount only three leaves 10 upon the loops 8 as it is merely necessary to disclose at this point either the numerals 1, 2 or 3.
The loops 8 located at the right of recess 3 extend through openings 11 formed in leaves 12 which are also made of aluminum or other light stifl material. The numerals displayed upon these leaves preferably range from 0 to 9 inclusive and it requires the display of two adjoining leaves to disclose any one of the numerals 1 to 8 inclusive. The character 0 is formed by turning all of the leaves but one to the right and thus exposing one-half of the character upon the exposed face of one leaf and the other half upon the adjoining exposed portion of the next leaf. The numeral 9 is displayed by turning all of the leaves 12 to the left, one-half of this numeral being exposed upon the front face of the front leaf, while the other half of the numeral is exposed upon the adjoining portion of the body 1. The leaves 10 and 12 are all so proportioned that when they are opened out, they will extend across and conceal the recess 3 and the leaves contained therein. hen the right leaves 10 are all turned to the left and all of the leaves 12 are turned to the right, the recess 3 and the leaves 6 therein are exposed.
Two or more loops 13 extend forward from the body 1 at points above the leaves 10 and 12, and these loops extend through openings let formed in elongated leaves 15 preferably made of the same material as the leaves hereinbefore described. Upon these leaves are printed or otherwise displayed the names of the months of the year, the upper half of one month appearing on one face of a leaf and the lower half of another month appearing on the other face of said leaf. The leaves are so assembled that by swinging them downward or upward successively, the months of the year will be successively displayed, the meeting edges of the upper and lower leaves being extended through the centers of the names.
Loops 16- extend forward from the lower portion of the body and below the leaves 10 and 12, these loops extending through openings 17 formed within elongated leaves 18 which are similar in construction to the leaves 15 heretofore described. 011 these leaves are arranged the names of the days of the week, one-half of each name appearing on the respective leaves so that by displaying two adjoining leaves, a complete name will appear thereon.
lVhen the leaves 10 are folded to the left and the leaves 12 to the right, thus exposing the central leaves 6, the said leaves 6 can be manipulated so as to successively disclose the numerals 1 to 9. The front faces of the exposed leaves 10 and 12 will not dis play numerals or portions of numerals while the leaves 6 are exposed. Instead these faces of the leaves 10 and 12 can be provided with suitable advertising matter. \Vhen it is desired to display the numeral 10 or any number of greater value up to 31, one or more of the leaves 10 are swung to the right and one or more of the leaves 12 are swung to the left so as to produce a predetermined combination of numerals. By shifting the leaves 15 and 18 the name of the month and day appearing on the calendar can be changed.
As the body 1 is normally in an inclined position, all of the leaves will be held by gravity in the positions to which they are shifted, it being therefore unnecessary to utilize any fastening means for holding them in place. The various leaves can be very readily manipulated and by successively turning them, the numerals or names can be exposed in proper succession.
The device is very light, durable and compact and, because of its simplicity, will not easily get out of order.
It is of course to be understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts .without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described includ ing a body, a series of leaves hingedly connected thereto, each face of each leaf having a portion of a character indicated thereon, the exposed faces of adjoining leaves having the portions of the characters thereon arranged to register to form a complete character, and a similar arrangement of leaves upon the body and at opposite sides .of the first mentioned leaves, said last mentioned leaves being arranged to extend over and conceal the first mentioned leaves.
2.
