WITNESSES m/v NTORS NITED STATES PATENT FFI Q ELISHA D. I-IURLBUT, JR'., AND DWIGHT TERRY, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
WRITING-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,713, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed January 15, 1900. Serial No. 1,460. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELISHA D. HURLBUT, Jr., a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and DWIGHT TERRY, a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and Improved Writing- Tablet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved writing-tablet arranged to keep double-sheet writing-paper in convenient pad form and to allow its immediate use for writing and for blotting the writing without the least danger of soiling the paper.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of our invention is represented in the accompanyingdrawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement in an open position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same partly open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same closed, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of part of the improvement.
The improved writing-tablet is provided with a back A, made of cardboard or other stiff material, and on the back A are placed superimposed double sheets 13 of writing-paper connected with each other and to the back A by glue, paste, or other suitable binding substance 0, applied to the crease or fold of said sheets, at the outside thereof, and also to the side edge of the back, so as to connect the sheets with each other and the sheets to the back A. As illustrated in the drawings, the sheets Bwhen folded are of the same size as the back A, and when the several sheets are connected with each other and to the back by the binding substance 0, as described, it is evident that the uppermost sheet can be readily torn from the pad of doublesheet writ-ingpaper formed, so that the several sheets may be successively removed when the writing is completed on the said sheets.
On the side of the back A, preferably at the under face thereof next to the binding substance 0, is fastened a flexible connection D, of canvas, leather, or other suitable material, to which is attached a cover E, adapted to be folded upon the uppermost sheet of writ ing-paper B for closing the tablet and protecting the writing paper from becoming soiled when not in use. The adjacent edges of the cover E and back A are placed a dis-- tance apart to give a width to the flexible connection D corresponding to the height of the sheets 13 when the tabletis first produced, so that when the cover E is folded over then the flexible connection D extends along the binding substance 0, so as to protect the same, and thus prevent the sheets from becoming accidentally disconnected from one another.
On the back A and on the side opposite the one having the flexible connection D is arranged a second flexible connection D, similar to the connection D, and on said second flexible connection D is secured a blotter F, having both faces capable of blotting the writing on the uppermost sheet, whether the writing is on the first or outside page or on one of the inside pages or on the last page, as the blotter can be readily folded upon any one of the pages of the sheet. The flexible connection D is of a width similar to the fiexible connection D to allow the blotter to readily extend flat over the uppermost sheet or pad of writing-paper.
WVhen the device is not in use, the blotter F is preferably folded first upon the top sheet of writing-paper, and then the cover E is folded upon the blotter, whereby the tablet is closed, as indicated in Fig. 5, and the writing-paper is held protected from injury. In using the tablet the cover E and the blotter F are swung in opposite directions into the open position shown in Fig. 1, so that the first page of the uppermost sheet of writing-paper is exposed to allow the user to write on said page. When the page is filled, then the writer swings the blotter F over upon the writing to blot the same with the inner face of the blotter, and then the latter is swung back into an open position, and the first leaf of the sheet of writing-paper is now turned over upon the cover E to allow the writer to fill the now exposed second and third pages with writing.- It is understood that when the first leaf is turned over upon the cover E, as above mentioned, the binding substance C, connecting the crease of' the first sheet with the next following sheet, serves as a fulcrum for the leaf to swing on without danger of displacing the sheet relatively to the remaining sheets of the pad. When the second and third, pages are filled with writing, then the blotter F is again swung inward upon the third page, and then the cover E, with the first leaf, is swung inward, so that the blotter becomes interposed between the two leaves of the sheet ond and third pages without danger of soiling any of the writing. When this has been done, the cover E, with the firstleaf, is swung back into an open position and likewise the blot- .ter F, and then the second leaf is turned over upon the first leaf to expose the fourth page of the, double sheet for the writer to write on. To blot this last page the blotter is swung inward upon the first page of the second sheet B of the writing paper, and then the first sheet, with the cover E, is swunginward into a closed position to bring the fourth page on the top of the outer face of the blotter. By gently rubbing on the cover the fourth page is, blotted. It will be understood that while the second and fourth pages are being Written upon the paper rests upon the cover E. When the four pages of the double sheet are filled with writing and blotted, as described, the cover E and the blotter F are swung open,; and then the sheet is torn olf from the bindv ingsubstance 0 along the crease or fold of Y the first sheet, and the latter can t then be folded in the usual manner for insertion in an envelop, if desired to send it away by mail.
Having'thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A writing-tablet, comprising a back, a
series of folded or double sheets of paper superimposed on said back, each half of. each folded sheet beingentirely free at its top,
. bottom, and outer edges from the other half be turned over successively,a detachable .con-
necting medium at the creases of the sheets,
a cover at the edge of the back nearest to the creases of the sheets, a blotter at the opposite edge of the back, and flexible connections between the adjacent edges of the back on one hand and the cover and blotter on the other hand, the width of said connections being approximately equal to the thickness of the pad formed bythe superimposed leaves.
In testimony whereof we have signed our f names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELISHA .D. HURLBUT, J R. DWIGHT TERRY.
