BLOTTER OR DESK-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 708,525, dated September 9, 1902. Application filed April 24, 1901. Serial No. 57,224. (No modeLl T0 to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BUSKIBK, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Blotters or Desk- Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pad for desk and writing purposes, and has for an object the provision of a simple and convenient article of this kind which may be folded into small compass and embodies parts for the retention of stationery and accessories.
In the drawings accompanying the present specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a pad embodying the present invention, the pad being shown with its various flaps or leaves opened out. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the pad, showing the same, however, in a partially folded or closed condition.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
The pad embraced in the present invention includes a body portion (designated in a general way byB) adapted for holding the usual blotter b or other material serving as a surface or support for the sheet of paper or other article to be written upon. Preferably this body portion will be of a stiff or more or less rigid nature, as usual in pad construction, and for the retention of the blotter, 850., it may be provided with the usual triangular corner clips or pockets 2, two being shown. The dimensions of this body portion B may be as desired, and to furnish a larger extent of surfaceI provide the same with an extension B, hinged to the body portion bya flexible connection, as shown at c, which extension when swung outward in line with the body portion furnishes a surface that may be covered by a single blotter or blotter-like piece,
. as shown, or the body portion and the extension may each be provided with a separate piece, the extension having the holdingpockets 2 2 at the corners, as before. The dimensions of the extension B may be equal to that of the body portion, in which event this extension when hinged as described serves the purpose of a flap that may be swung back upon the body portion to cover the same and exclude any writing or matter thereon from View. At the opposite side of-the body portion is disposed a second flap B, similarly hinged by a flexible portion 0 to the body part. This flap B, I utilize as a means for holding the stationery, pens, pencils, and other accessories. It may be furnished with any desired arrangement of retaining-pockets, a convenient disposition of the same being shown and embodying a pocket side piece 3, connected by the usual bellows construction with the flap B, forming thus an expansible pocket for the reception of papers, 850., while to the exposed face of the piece 3 there is secured an end pocket or receptacle 4. From one to the other of the longer edges of the larger pocket extends a suitable number of bands or strips 5, there being shown here but one secured to the pocket at the longer edges thereof and along a line intermediate the ends of the band.
For the convenient retention of pencils, pens, paper, and the like I have shown corrugated bands or strips 6 6 secured to the side of the piece 3 at the longer edges thereof and formed by wires 7, bent to form corrugations and covered with somesuitable material, such as leather, to form a casing therefor. These corrugated wires extend around the edges of each corrugated band and by their elasticity act to effectively confine an object slipped under the band. When constructed thus, it
is evident that the side flaps of the pad may be folded back upon the body portion, thus reducing the linear dimensions of the article considered as a whole and enabling the same to be folded into small compass.
As a further feature either one of the flaps B B may be adapted to hold a blotter on its exterior. Thus, for instance and as shown,
the flap B is provided on its exterior face with a pocket 2 at each corner, in which pockets may be slipped the corresponding corners of a blotter, (not shown,) which will thus be exposed when the flap is folded back upon the body portion.
Having described my invention, I claim Apad of the character substantially as herein specified; comprising a body-section and two flexibly-attached foldable sections, said body-section and one of said foldable sect-ions being provided at the corners thereof most remote from each other with triangular pockets adapted to receive the corners of blotters and similar sheets, a pocket attached at one of its bands or strips attached thereto at widelylonger edges to the inner edge of the other separated points, and with suitably-attached foldable section, said pocket being practically transverse corrugated bands or strips.
of equal dimensions with said section, and GEORGE W. BUSKIRK. the two being united at the shorter edges Witnesses:
thereof by an extensible connection, the FRED. J. DOLE,
pocket being also provided with transverse O. E. Voss.
