IJMTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK S. HASBROUOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRITING-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,932, dated November 22, 1881, Application filed March 5, i881. x model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. HAS- BROUGK, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVriting- Tablets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive writing-tablet which combines in a convenient form a receptacle or box for writing-paper, either in loose sheets or in a pad, a writing-surface upon which single sheets may be laid for writing, and blottingpaper.
To this end the invention consists in a writing-tablet comprising a number of detachable sheets of paper, a box receiving them, retaining them in position, and covering and thereby protecting their edges, a writing-surface upon which the sheets, when detached, may
1 be placed and used, and a blotter attached to said writing-surface, the said writing-surface forming a cover for the box when the tablet is not in use, and the blotter lying between the sheets of the tablet and the writing-surface when the latter is employed as a cover. The box is preferably provided at one or both ends with lips or flaps, which lap over the edge or edges of the sheets of paper contained in the box andserve to retain them therein, and also to prevent their corners from being curled or dog-cared by the writer when writing upon the writing-surface; and the edge of the writing-surface may be provided with a projecting lip, which, when it is employed as a cover, will slip into the box, between the front thereof and the edges of the paper.
The invention also consists in a novel combination of a blotter with a tablet of the kind above described, whereby all the blotting-surfaces may be used.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved tablet opened for use and Fig. 2 represents the tablet when closed for convenience in carrying, except that the writing-surface which forms the cover is slightly raised at one corner.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
A designates a rectangular box, which is made of a size to receive and retain sheets B of note, letter, or other writing-paper, which may be detached or removed from the box one by one, as it is desired to use them. The sheets B of writing-paper may be loose or separate from each other, or they maybe made into a pad, fastened together at their left-hand and top edges, and left free at their bottom and right-hand edges; but in any case the box covers and thereby protects the edges of the paper. This renders the box capable of receiv in g loose sheets of paper as well as a pad.
0 designates a writingsurface, the length and breadth of which are about equal to that of the box A, and which is connected with the box by a hinged portion, a, so that it may be folded over the box and form a cover therefor to protect the sheets of paper B and prevent them from becoming soiled.
The box A and writing-surface and cover 0 may be constructed of paper, board, or other suitable material, and they may be very conveniently formed, as here shown, of a single piece of thick paper out in the proper shape, with portions which are bent up and fastened to form the ends I) and front 0 of the box.
The back D of the box is open, as shown in Fig. 1, when the tablet is in use, and when closed, as in Fig. 2, the side (I is closed by the hinge portion a. At the two ends I) of the box A are lips or flaps b which lap over the sheets of writing-paper B and retain them in the box. Where a pad of writing-paper is contained in the box the upper lip or flap, 11 is not necessary, but the lower lip or flap is very advantageous in any case, as it prevents the sleeve or cuff of the writer from curling up or dog-caring the lower right-hand corners of the paper.
Atthe outer edge the writing-surface G is provided with a projecting lip, c, which, when the said surface is used as a cover for the box, is inserted within the front 0 of the box, and between the front and the edges of the paper B, as shown in Fig. 2.
To the writing-surface G is attached one or more sheets of blotting-paper, as shown in Fig. 1. In this instance two sheets, D D, of blotting-paper, of about the size of the writing-surface 0, are connected together by a flexible hinge, f, and are secured to the outer portion ofthe writing-surface by a strap or tape, g,
which is fastened by adhesive substance or otherwise to the blotter and also to the writingsurface.
The strap or tape g may project through a slit in the writing-surface, and the said writin gsurface may be raised by it to open the tablet. When the blotter is thus arranged four blotting-surfaces are afforded, either of which may be conveniently used.
If desirable, more that two sheets of blotting-paper may be connected in the manner here shown.
When the tablet is to be used the writingsurface 0 is spread out and the blotter D may be opened, so as to project beyond the said surface. After writing the blotter is folded down over the written sheet to blot it, and then the writing-surface is folded over the box, closing the latter and protecting the paper therein.
My writing-tabletisvery desirable, inasmueh as it protects the writing-paper on all sides, and because it forms a compact and light tablet, which may be carried in the pocket, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A writing-tablet comprising a. number of detachable sheets of paper, a box receiving them, retaining them in position, and covering and thereby protecting their edges, a writingsurface upon which the sheets, when detached, may be placed and used, and a blotter attached to said writing-surface, the said writing-surface forming a cover for the box when the tablet is not in use, and the blotter lying between the sheets of the tablet and the writing-surface when the latter is employed as a cover, substantially as specified.
2. A writing-tablet comprising a number of detachable sheets of paper, a box receiving them and provided at one or both ends with lips or flaps which lap over said sheets and retain them in position, a writing-surface upon which the sheets, when detached, may be placed and used, and a blotter attached to said writing-surface, the writing-surface forminga cover for the box when the tablet is not in use, and the blotter lying between the sheets of the tablet and the writing-surface when the latter is employed as a eover, substantially as specified.
3. A writing-tablet comprising the box A, provided with lips or flaps b 1), sheets of paper B contained therein, the writing-surface 0, provided with the lip e, and the blotter D, substantially as specified.
4. A writing-tablet comprising the box A, sheets of paper B, the writing-surface C, and the blotter composed of two or more sheets, D, connected together and secured at their connected edges to the outer portion of the writing-surface, substantially as specified.
