ATTORNEYS ".PETERS PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHEE WASHINGTON, n c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARK J. BROWN, OF RANDOLPH, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN G. JACK, OF SAME PLACE.
PORTFOLIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,394, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed April 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARK J. BROWN, of Randolph, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portfolios; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved portfolio open and ready for use. Fig.
2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the copy-holder.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improved portfolio, designed especially for theuse of students of penmanship; and it consists in the improved construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A B represent the covers of my improved portfolio, which are connected by the flexible back C, which may be formed, as in the drawings, by making the covers of one piece of card-board or other suitable material sufficiently durable and bending and doubling the same at the proper place, as shown.
The covers A B are provided upon their inner sides with pockets D E, extending from 5 the edges toward the back, but terminating within several inches of the latter, so as to leave a copy-book or sheets of paper deposited in said pockets partly exposed. I
Closely adjoining the pocket D the ooverA 0 is provided with a transverse flap or strip, F,
reaching nearly or quite to the back 0, and provided with heavy diagonal ruling, serving to guide the penman.
G is a box or case, made of metal or other- 5 suitable material, to receive the copy-slips H, the faces of which may be successively exposed through the open front of said box, in
(ModeL) which they are retained by a wire, I, or by lugs suitably attached.
A piece of blotting-paper may be attached to the under side of the case.
Box G is provided at each end with a wire arm, J, by which it is hinged to lugs K, secured to the pocket-flap D in such a position as to rest upon the tops of the sheets placed 5 in said pocket.
One or more flaps, L, of flannel or other suitable material, are stitched or otherwise secured to the cover B, closely adjoining the back C, thus forming a convenient pen-wiper, 6o always handy for use. The flap or flapsL are folded in such a manner as to form a pocket,
P, to receive the pen-holder.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
When in use the copy-slip is always exposed at the head of the sheet, which latter, as fast as required, may be drawn out of pocket D, thus enabling the student to expose the blank line upon which he is writing just below the copy-slip. By placing all the sheets except the one which is being written upon below the strip F the ruling upon the latter may be seen through the said sheet, and thus serve to guide the penman. As fast as the sheets are filled they may be placed in pocket Efor safe-keeping. Finally, the pocket D serves as a handrest and prevents the sheets from being soiled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with the portfolio A B C, having pockets D E, of the hinged copy-slip holder G, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARK J. BROWN.
