Be it known that I, CHARLES P. Zonne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Napa, in the county of Napa, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Cases; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

rl`his invention relates to improvements in filing cases used for filing all kinds of papers and particularly7 to bankers cases used for iiling notes and collaterals of all kinds, etc., .the object of the invention being to produce a case in which the pockets will not are when open, but will open in an upright and vertical position thereby avoiding the muffling of papers as is true in flaring cases and also permits the indexes on the pockets to be read easily and readily.

The main features of the invention are fully disclosed in my Letters Patent No. 909,7 34, dated January 12, 1909, and this present application is designed and intended as an improvement over the structure shown in that patent, this present invention providing a means which will fulfil the same objects as above set forth and at the same time provide for covering the filing pockets in different predetermined extended positions whereby as the ling pockets are folded up and extended, they will still be covered without the necessity of cramping or squeezing and will be able to hold a much greater quantity of papers.

These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fling case showing the case in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it in its first predetermined extended closed position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing it in its second predetermined extended closed position. as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing it in complete open position showing how the folding cover lies irrespectively beneath the pocket-s permitting the pockets to be extended on said cover said pockets thus maintaining their upward position at all times.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates the pockets of the case which are provided with the usual index, letters, numbers, etc., said pockets being adapted to open and close in a horizontal line and maintain their normal vertical position at all times. On said pockets 1 is an independent back and cover comprising a plurality of narrow c independent rigid members 2 flexibly joined as at 3 all of said members 2 with the exception of the one fastened to the front of the member 1 being entirely independent of said member 1. These members 2 are adapted to fold over and form a cover around the pockets 1 from end to end thereof and they differentiate from my previous patent in that they are of a narrower width and adapted to bend more frequently as at the joints 3 whereby when the pockets 1 are 'lartly filled as shown in Fig. 2, then the members 2 will bend around said pockets 1 as shown and be secured in said position by means of a strap 4 adapted to extend around said members 2 from end to end of the case and be suitably buckled as at 5. Then when a greater number of papers are filed in the pockets 1 and extending them farther as shown in Fig. 3 then the narrow members 2 still will envelop the same from end to end as shown in said Fig. 3 and be secured by said buckle 5. The length of the cover formed by the members 2 permits the same to cover the pockets in the several positions described, the iexibility of the same permitting them to so envelop such pockets at the predetermined points as set forth.

With the farthest extending position as shown in Fig. 3, I provide an inflexible member 6 having loops 7 through which the straps 4 are inserted, this iniiexible member 6 fitting across the top of the case on the members 2 and holding the same in rigid horizontal position preventing them from doubling up and becoming distorted. Similarly rigid members may be placed on the end of the case if desired.

From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that the structure embodied in this present application constitutes an improvement over my Patent No. 909,734; in that it has a cover of sufficient length to en- Velop the envelops at different predetermined extended positions and the members 2 are of such size and number as to permit this to be done in effective manner and still to form a platform extended horizontally to permit the pockets 2 to be extended over the same in a horizontal manner and still maintain their Vertical position.

While this specication sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A filing case comprising a plurality of flexible pocket members adapted to open and close in a substantially horizontal manner, a flexible cover for said pockets, such cover being fastened at one point to said pockets and being entirely independent of said pocket members for the rest of its entire length and being of sufficient length to en- Velop said pockets in closed or open position, a strap on said cover adapted to extend around from end to end of said case and having a suitable buckle, an inflexible member adapted to extend horizontally across the top of said case and said cover and means for securing said inflexible member to said strap as described.

2. A combination of a plurality of flexible pocket members adapted to open and close in a substantially horizontal manner and a cover on said pocket members composed of a plurality of inflexible members hinged toget-her, said cover being secured to one end i of said pocket members and being independent of said pocket members for the remainder of its entire length, such cover being of suficient length to envelop said pockets from end to end when such pockets are extended in a plurality of different predetermined extended positions as described.
