COMBINED POLL-BOOK AND TALLY-SHEET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,948, dated October 25, 18187.
Application filer] November 16, 1885. Serial No. 182,949. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. KINNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Poll-Book and Tally-Sheet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined poll-books and tally-sheets for election purposes, and has for its object the combination, with a removable cover, of a book provided with a permanent envelope forming a half-cover and serving as a means for securing the book within the removable cover, and whereby, when said book is removed, it can be folded up into small compass and be covered and sealed by said envelope and filed away for future reference. It is intended as an improvement upon my prior invention, for which Letters Patent were granted April 20, 1886, No. 340,218, though it will be apparent that the invention need not be limited to a book for election purposes merely, as it would answerl the purpose of any record-book which it was desired to reduce to a small compass and lile away for future reference.
The novelty of the invention will be herein set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved book within the cover and ready for use. Fig. 2is a plan view of the book removed from the cover and with the envelope open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View of the book folded up and sealed within the envelope in condition to be filed away. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the line a: .r of Fig. l, showing the book open.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.
I provide any ordinary cover, A, one inner side of which is provided withapocket formed by the overlapping fiap B, secured to the side and ends thereof.
C is the bookin this instance a combined poll book and tally sheet containing the features of my invention before referred to and differing from the same in the following particulars: It is creased or indented transversely, as shown by the dotted lines a, into as many divisions as it is desired to fold the book into, though where the book is not a thick one these folding-creases may be dispensed with. Attached to this book, alongv the side of one of the folding divisions, is a liexible enveloping-cover, D, of a width equal to that of the book and of alength sufficient to completely envelopit when it is folded.
To attach the book to the removable cover A it is only necessary to slip the envelopingcover D into the pocket formed bythe flap B, as shown in Fig. l. The book is then ready for use, and when the record it is designed to contain is completed it can be removed from the cover A and foldedup with the enveloping-cover D around it, as shown in Fig. 3, and be iiled away for future reference, with a slatement ofthe contents indorsed upon the outside thereof.
I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the single pocket and the enveloping-cover D as a means for securing the book to the cover temporarily, as, if desired, there may be pockets on both inner sides of the cover A, into one of which the 'j cover D would be slipped and into the other of which a blank. leaf of the book could be slipped; or, instead of these pockets, other means of temporarily securing the books to the cover A could be employed-such, for in` stance, as a rubber band or a string extending from top to bottom ofthe cover at its ccnter, and under which the open book could be slipped and by which it would be held.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- The combination, with the book C, provided with creases a, of the enveloping-cover D, permanently attached to the back'of the book at one end thereof for a distance equal to one of the folds, and the removable cover A, provided with the overlapping flap B, arranged to receive and hold the cover D and thereby temporarily secure the book to the removable cover A, and whereby, when the book C is removed from the cover A and folded transversely upon itself, the permanent cover D may be folded around the book Gand sealed, substantially as described.
WILLIAM M. KINNABD.
