POCKET CARD-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,339, dated June 18, 1889.

Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BUFFUM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Card-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to devices whereby a number of sheets of paper of uniform sizeas, for example, business-cards can be readily held in detachable connection, either as a mass or one by one, with a suitable inclosing and protecting cover of a size and form adapted to be carried in the pocket. The object of my invention is to produce a device of this character having certain improved features of construction, whereby its cheapness, efficiency, and convenience are increased.

In the accompanying drawings, I have represented at Figure 1 a view in longitudinal section of a device embodying my present improvement, the pack of cards being shown in.

Fig. 4c .shows a modification of the structure represented in Fig. 2, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the drawings, the cover A represents a centrally-folded cover of alength sufficient to inclose and protect the pack of cards or sheets to be used in connection with it. Upon the in ner side of one of the leaves or portion of this cover I provide a pocket a, of a width and depth sufficient to receive and hold a tonguepiece B. This tongue-piece is folded at its upper portion to form a flap b, as shown. Furthermore, in connection with this tonguepiece I provide a re-enforcing and backing piece C. This piece 0, as represented, overlaps the tongue-piece B for a portion of its length, while its upper portion 0 covers the inner edge of the packet of cards D.

The folded portion or flap 5 of the tonguepiece B is secured to the under side of the under sheet of the pack. The re-enforcing piece 0 is secured at its lower part to the tongue-piece B, and at its upper part is folded around and secured to the inner end of the pack of sheets or cards D.

The tongue-piece B is preferably formed of card-board, and the re-enforcing piece 0 of some similar material, but of lighter weight. The flap b of the tongue-piece is preferably secured to the under sheet of the pack D by adhesive material, as gum, and the re-enforcing piece 0 is preferably secured to the piece B and the ends of the sheets of the pack D in the same manner.

It is obvious that with the construction above described the cards or sheets of the pack D may be detached one by one from the pack by a slight pull. The tongue B, with its hinge or flap b, in connection with. the reenforoing piece 0, with its flap or portion 0, serves at the same time as a convenient attachment of the pack to the cover A by reason of the tongue-piece attached to the pack entering the pocket attached to the cover. At

the same time it is obvious that the two may readily be separated when desiredas, for example, when a fresh pack is to be put into the cover-by withdrawing the tongue-piece from the pocket.

If desired, the portion 0 of the re-enforcing sheet 0, the flap 1) of the tongue-piece B, and the inner ends of the sheets of the pack D may be also connected by stitching or other- Wise suitably binding them together, as indicated at d in Fig. 4. Vith this construction it will be also desirable to perforate the sheets of the pack at d, as shown in that figure.

I am aware that it is not broadly new with me to provide a pack of sheets in detachable connection with a folded cover. I-leretofore, however, so far as I am aware, this has been done by means of some metallic clip, the use of which adds to the expense and difficulty of the manufacture of such articles. I do not, therefore, desire to be understood as making any broad claim to the combination of the folding cover and detachable pack, but simply to my specific construction.

I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of an outside folding cover A, provided with an interior pocket a, a tonguepiece B, having a flap b, a re-enforcingpiece 0, having a folded upper portion 0, and a pack of cards or sheets D, the tongue-piece, its flap, the re-enforcing piece, and the inner end of the pack being joined together, as described.
