Description
A aww UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN B. ALDERSON, OF SAN JOS, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BILL-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,501, dated March 9, 1875 application tiled January 23, 1875.
GAsE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN B. ALBER- sON, of San J os, Santa Clara county, State of California, have invented a Bill-File; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further in vention or experiment.
My invention relates to certain improvements in temporary bill les or holders, such as are employed to carry bills, letters, or other papers for present reference; and it consists in the formation of a groove or slot extending along both portions ot' the hinged front, so that a pen or pencil can lie in this groove, and a single elastic strap about the middle of the holder will press the pencil against the hinged front, so as to keep it closed Without the necessity of an additional strap. It also consists in the use of a temporary memorandum slate or tablet upon the inside of the hinged leat'.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for 'a more complete explanation of my invention,
Figure l is a View of my le closed. Fig. 2 is a View of my tile opened.
A is the back, and B O is the hinged front, of a bill-holder for temporary use. These are made of any suitable stift' card-board or other material. The parts are usually held together by two elastic bands, one near the bottom, while the other surrounds the upper part, and pre vents the hinged leaf O from turning down. This is inconvenient, as it necessitates the removal of the upperstrap when it is desired to examine the contained papers. In my improved holder I form a groove or slot, d d, eX- tending lengthwise of the holder, so that part of it lies in the portion B and part in the leaf O of the hinged front. A single elastic strap, E, encircles the holder below the hinge, and a pen or pencil, F, is placed in the groove d beneath the stra-p. The tension of this strap holds the pencil tightly against the two parts B and O, and this forms a rigid bar, to prevent the leaf O from falling open, while the groove retains the pencil in its upright position. It will thus be seen that in order to eX- aniine the contained papers it is only necessary to remove the pencil or turn it to one side, when the leaf will fall back. The pencil can also be drawn out easily for the purpose of making any memorandum or receipting bills.
For the purposes of temporary memorandums I construct a slate or tablet, H, Within the leaf O, so that when this leaf falls back the slate will be exposed, and can at any time be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hinged front B O of a paper-holder, having the groove or slot d d extending across both parts, in combination with the rigid bar F and single elastic strap E, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
