To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, ADAM MIEDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rhyolite, in the county of Nye and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Memorandum- Books, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved pocket memorandum which is so designed as to also embody a stamp pouch and a pocket for the reception of pencils or other implements used in writing.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is very compact in structure and will readily fit within the vest pocket7 and which is at the same time formed so as to be very cheaply and economically manufactured.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the device when in a closed position; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line x-v of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device in an open position; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the upper portion of thev device; Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view of the pad holder,'the base being shown in dotted lines, and the holder having different proportions from that shown in Fig. 3. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The binding employed in connection with the present invention is similar to that ordinarily used upon note books and comprises the two comparatively stiff covers 1 and 2 which are connected at corresponding ends by means of the flexible portion 3 so as to readily fold against each other. The cover 1 forms a base for the pad or tablet 4 and is provided on its outer face with a covering 5 which has its edges secured to the base l and is open at one end to form a pocket for the reception of the pencils 6 or similar writing implements.

In the present instance, the covering 5 is shown as formed of flexible material such as leather and is a continuation of the backing upon the cover l2. A plate 7 of sheet material fits against the inner face of the base 1 toward theiouter end thereof and is held in position by means of a tongue 8 which is stamped from the plate and passes through the base. The sides and top of the plate 7 are bent outwardly'to form the side iianges 9 and top flange 10 within which the upper ends of the leaves of writing material constituting the pad 4 fit. At opposite sides of the rtongue 8 in the plate 7 a pair of larger tongues 1l. are formed which are bent outwardly and pass through slots 12 formed in the base 1. These tongues 11 project beyond the base and bear against the covering 5, thereby forming partitions which sub-divide the mouth of the before-mentioned pencil receiving pocket into a number of separate passages.

In order to hold the pencils 6 in position within the pocket, a band 13 of elastic material extends around the mouth of the pocket and passes through openings 14 in the tongues l1. The portions of the tongues beyond the openings 14 are bent to form the lateral extending flanges l5 which form a broad bearing surface to prevent the tongues from injuring the covering 5 and also prevent undue wear upon the band 13. lith this construction it will be seen that where a number of pencils 6 are placed within the pocket, each pencil will be securely gripped by the band 13 and held in position regardless of the relative sizes of the various pencils. The side flanges 9 upon the base plate 7 are formed with the corresponding notches 16 and a bar 17 is provided which extends across the upper end of the tablet 4 and serves as a clamping means for holding the same in position. The ends of this bar 17 fit loosely within the notches 16 and are provided with eyes 18, the latter being preferably formed by looping the ends of the bar as shown in the drawings. The ends of the elastic band 13 extending around the mouth of the pocket pass through openings 19 in the cover 1 and are secured to the ends of the bar 17.

In the preferred construction, the member 13 is in the form of an ordinary rubber band, the ends of which are inserted through the eyes 18. lt will thus be seen that the elastic band 13 serves the double function of holding the writing implements 6 securely in position in the pocket and also of clamping the tablet against the plate 7.

The opposite cover 2 has a stamp pouch 21 secured to its inner face, the said pouch containing a number of oiled or waxed sheets 22 between which the stamps are placed and being closed by a ap 23 provided with the end extensions 24 which normally t under the wings 25.

In the preferred construction, the stamp pouch is formed of a single piece of sheet material, preferably, oiled paper which is cut to form the blank shown in Fig. 9. This blank comprises the body portion 26 and the two

27 and 23, the latter forming the flap as before mentioned. These side' pieces fold over against the body portion and the member 27 is provided with the lateral wings 25 and also with the end pieces 28 which are folded against the rear face of the portion 26. The extensions 24 upon the flap 23 are formed by notches adjacent the hinged portion as shown in the drawings and these extensions normally fit under the wings 25 when the pouch is closed. If found desirable, the hinged portion of the flap 23 can be reinforced by a strip 29 of fabric or similar material.

In the present instance a manifolding attachment is employed in connection with the tablet and this attachment comprises the carbon sheet 30 and the backing 31 which is in the nature of a sheet of plain material and has one edge thereof secured to the corresponding edge of the carbon sheet. The use of this attachment will be obvious, the leaf of the pad receiving the duplicate being placed between the carbon sheet and the backing in the usual manner. This manifolding device will be'found particularly useful when the invention is employed by rent collectors or the like who wish to make accurate copies of receipts, orders, or the like, since in this manner the possibility of an error in filling out a stub or making a second copy is obviated,

In the practical construction of the tablet holder the notches 16 are preferably located near the outer end thereof as indicated in the drawings and the tongues 11 are also preferably given a similar location in order that they may subdivide the mouth of the pocket in such a manner as to facilitate placing the pencils in position therein.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. 'lhe combination of a base, a covering upon one side of the base cooperating therewith to form a pocket, and a plate secured to the base and provided with means for engaging a pad, the said plate also embodying means for subdividing the pocket.

2. The combination of a base, a covering upon one side of the base coperating therewith to form a pocket, and a plate secured to the base, the said plate being formed with tongues suhdividing the pocket and also being provided with means for engaging a pad.

3. The combination of a base, a covering for one side of the base coperating therewith to form a pocket, and a plate secured to the base, said plate being formed with tongues subdividing the pocket and also with lianges designed to engage a pad.

4. lhe combination of a base, a covering upon one side of the base coperating therewith to form a pocket, a plate mounted upon the base and provided with tongues subdividing the pocket, said plate being also provided with means for engaging a pad, and a flexible member extending' around the mouth of the pocket and connected to the said tongues.

5. The combination of a base, a covering upon one side of the base coperatingr therewith to form a pocket, a plate mounted upon the base and provided with tongues subdividing the pocket, said plate being also provided with means for engaging a pad, and a flexible member extending around the mouth of the pocket and connected to the tongues, the said nexiblc member serving the double function of normally tending to close the mouth of the pocket and of aiding in the retention of the pad in proper position.

G. The combination of a base, a covering upon one side of the base coperating therewith to form a pocket, a plate secured to the base and provided with tongues subdividing the pocket, the said plate also emboyding means for engaging a pad, a bar extending across the pad, and an elastic band connected to the bar and extending around the pocket, the said band being also connected to the before mentioned tongues.

7. The combination of a base, a covering upon one side of the base cooperating therewith to form a pocket, and a plate mounted upon the base and provided with means for engaging a pad, the said plate also embodying tongues which subdivide the pocket and have their extremities formed with laterally extending fianges to prevent injury to the cover.

The combination of a base, a cover cooperating therewith to form a pocket, a plate secured to the base and provided with means for engaging a pad, the said plate also embodyingl tongues subdividing the pocket, the extremities of the tongues being provided with laterally extending langes and the portions of the tongues adjacent the flanges being perforated. and a flexible member extending around the mouth of the pocket and passing through the perforations in the tongues.

The combination of a base, a covering coperating with the base to form a pocket, a plate mounted upon the base and formed with tongues subdividing the pocket, the extremities of the tongues being provided with lateral flanges and the portions of the tongues adjacent the flanges being perforated, the said plate being also provided with means for engaging a pad, a bar extending across the pad, and a band secured to the bar and extending around the month of the pocket, the said band passing through the perfoi-ations in the tongues.

10. ',lhe combination of a base, a plate secured to the base and provided with oppositely disposed outwardly projecting flanges designed to receive a pad, the said fianges being provided at corresponding points with notches, a bar extending across the pad and operating within the notches, and an elastic band secured to the extremities of the bar and extending around the base.

11. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base, a pair of oppositely disposed fianges projecting from the base and provided with corresponding notches, a pad fitting between the flanges, a bar extending across the pad and operating freely in the notches, and an elastic band connected to the bar and serving to draw the same tightly against the pad, the said band also serving to clamp the writing implements against the opposite side of the base.
