I E. J. KAUFFMANN.
COVER FOR BOOKS, PADS, &o.
No; 576,785. Patented Feb. 9 '1897;
nms PETERS co. PHOTO-LITHQ, wnsnmomn u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE JOHN KAUFFMANN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COVER FOR BOOKS, PADS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,785, dated February 9, 1897.
Application filed April '7, 1896. Serial No. 586,569. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE J OHN KAUFF- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Blank Books, Pads, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to produce a cover for blank books, pads of paper, and the like which shall possess certain novel and improved features, whereby there is formed a receptacle for an inking-pad,which is closed and protected by the cover and whereby also the pad or book is also held in place.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one and the preferred form of my invention without, however, intending thereby to limit my invention in its useful applications to the particular form thereof which I have, for the purpose of illustration, chosen to delineate.
In such drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the cover in open position and with a blank book in place. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an edge View. Fig. 4 is aview of the back edge of the cover.
The cover is formed of two sheets of material A and B,which are preferably rigid, aluminium being well adapted for such use. One of the sheets, preferably the lower one,
has one edge turned up, as at a, to form a flange, to the edge of which the other sheet is hinged. lhis flange is cut away at the middle of its edge, leaving two portions a, which are folded over and made to engage with and hold the hinge-pin O, and the central portion 1) of the hinged edge of the upper leaf or sheet B encircles and turns on pin 0.
There is secured to one of the leaves or sheets of the cover a receptacle D for an inkpad E. This receptacle is preferably an opentopped box of metal or rigid material secured to the leaf A alongside of the flange a, the depth of the box being equal to the height of the flange. Any usual form of ink-pad may be used.
When the receptacle D is placed as just described, I form the edge of the box which is away from the hinge wit-h an overhanging flange F,whichis adapted to engage with the bound edge of a book G or pad of paper and serves to hold the same against the sheet or leaf A. Other means could be employed for securing the book in place, but that which is shown is simple and efficient.
The size and shape of the receptacle and pad may be varied to suit the purposes for which the cover is used, and they might be secured to the cover-sheet A in a different position from that shown, or even secured to the cover-sheet B; but I prefer the arrangement shown, because the box D serves to stiffen the cover at the back and adjacent to the hinge and at the same time enables the clamp or book-holder F to be in one piece with the box. The receptacle should, however, whatever the arrangement, be situated upon the inside of the hinge, so that it will be covered and protected by the same covers or leaves that protect the pad or book. In this respect my invention differs from those pad-holders in which a receptacle for pens, pencils, and the like is supported upon the same base as the pad or book, but is otherwise quite independent thereof, having its own independent cover.
T he pad might occupy but a part of the space within the box or receptacle D, a rubber stamp or other object occupying the remaining space.
My invention is intended to be used with thumb-mark albums, that is, albums or blank books in which are collected the im-v prints made by the thumbs of persons, the thumbs being first pressed upon the ink-pad and then upon a page of the book or pad. It might, however, be used with a check or receipt book, a rubber stamp being used to give the imprint.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A cover for books, pads, &c. comprising two sheets of rigid material of practically the same size, one, A, provided along one edge with a flange, and the other, B, hinged to such flange, a receptacle adapted to contain an inkpad secured to the cover-sheet A along the inner side of the said flange, and means for securing a pad, or book upon the cover-sheet, A, the cover-sheet, B, serving to cover both the ink-receptacle and the pad or book, snbi clamp 01' holder for the bound edge of a book IO stantially as set forth. or pad, substantially as set forth.
2. A cover for books, &e., consisting of a In testimony whereof I have hereunto set sheet of rigid material A, formed along one my hand in the presence of two Witnesses. edgewith afiange, a, another sheet, 13, hinged 1 x T T r T T to such flange, and a box or receptacle D se- LUGEBL JOHL IXAUFFMABA' cured to the cover-sheet A along the said \Vitnesses: flange, adapted to contain an ink-pad, and JOEL C. CLORE,
provided with a flange F which constitutes a i B. P. IIARGITT.
