Description

(ModeL) .H. T WHIPPLE. POCKET MEMORANDUM BOOK.
' Patented Nov. 18 1884.

Unites STATES HARRISON T. WHIPPLE, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
POCKET MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,295, dated November 18, 1884.
Application filed December 3, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRISON T. WHIPPLE, residing in Portland, in the county of Gumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Memorandum-Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to a new and ingenious improvement in pocket memorandumbooks.
The accompanying drawings fully explain my improvement.
Figure l is a view with the supplemental flap closed over the memorandum-sheets. Fig. 2 is a view wit-h the flap thrown back. Fig. 3 is an edge view. Fig. 4 is a view of the open case. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the blank book in place inside.
In the several figures of the drawings the same reference-letters are used to designate like parts.
In the drawings, a represents the case or cover ordinarily used in the construction of pocket letter-cases, covers for detachable account and memorandum books, and the like. This case a may be of any desired shape or size and of any suitable material. I) is a supplemental flap or cover attached at one end to the outside of the case a by means of rows of stitches c c.
d represents a series of paper sheets attached to the ,front of the case a by means of elastic binding-bands. The series of paper sheets, as shown in the drawings, are so located that the flap I), when folded down, completely covers them and protects them from all danger of being torn or blurred or otherwise injured when the device is carried about in the pocket. 6 c are eyelets at or near the top of the case a, which are to receive an elastic binding-band, f. Other eyelets, g g, are seen at or near the bottom of the case a. Through these eyelets pass binding-bands h h. The binding-bandsf and h h are to hold and confine the series of paper sheets d firmly and securely in position. In attaching the sheets d (Model.)
to the outside of the case a the sheets are confinedat the top by the bandf, running from side to side, while at the bottom the sheets are held by the bands h h, running across the corners. This method of binding the paper sheets is of considerable importance. By it the sheets can be readily attached or detached, and the cross-bands h h prevent the sheets from slipping downward, and also prevent the corners of the sheets from becoming dogeared.
Opening the case a, the small detachable blank book is is seen attached to the case at the folding-line by means of a binding-band, m, said binding-band passing through eyelets 0. This method of attaching a blank book to a pocket-case is too well known to require further description.
p 19 represent slips or pockets on the inside of the case a.
The use and application of the device is ob- 7o vious and does not call for elaboration. As a handy pocket device for recording memoranda of events, &c., which are of so transitory a character that a person does not care to make a permanent record of them, my invention 7 5 presents many very decided advantages, a few of which are as follows: The sheets are easily attachable and removable. The bindingbands hold the sheets securely in position. The flap obviates all danger that anything Written upon a memorandum-sheet will be defaced or destroyed by carrying in the pocket.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pocket letter-case, detachable accountbook case, or other analogous device, to one cover of which is stitched a supplemental flap or protector, substantially as described, said flap or protector covering and protecting a series of paper sheets, which are attached to the case-cover by means of elastic binding-bands, located as hereinset forth, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the case a, having eyelets e e and g g, the binding-bands f and h h, for holding a series ofpapersheets, d, in position, the stitched flap or protector b, for covering said paper sheets (1, all the parts co-operating substantially as and for the purposes In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my to set forth. own I have affixed my signature in the pres- 3. A pocket-memorandum, account-book, ence of two witnesses. and letter case consisting of the following parts in combination: the case a, supplemental HARRISON T. WHIPPLE. flap b, eyelets e e and g g,vbinding-bandsf, h h, andm, and detachable blank book is, operated WVitnesses: and combined substantially as set forth, for 7M. H. MOTLEY, the purposes specified.
