UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GEORGE H. KENT, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
COVER FOR MANUSCRIPTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485.814, dated November 8, 1892.
Application filed October 28, 1891- Serial No. 410,094. (No model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY KENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Manuscripts, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention has for its object a cover which will both securely hold blank paper or a inanscript paper and also permit it to be readily taken therefrom, both leaves of the cover being so constructed that they can be turned entirely ,over, so as to enable the manuscript to be more easily read or the paper to be more readily written upon.
In the drawings, I have shown in Figure 1 a plan View of the front of my improved cover, in Fig. 2 a plan view of the back thereof, and in Fig. 3 a side view of the same.
A designates the covers, which are made non-flexible or so as not to be readily bent.
B is a stiff strip of leather or other suitable material on each side, having holes therein, through which are to be inserted suitable fastenings cl. I prefer to use the well-known fastening consisting of a head and double shank, the two parts of which are to beturned opposite ways when fastened, as shown in Fig. 2, but which may be readily straightened again and taken out when the contents of the cover are to be removed.
1) is a flexible piece, preferably of leather, acting as a joint and of such length as to permit eitherleaf of the cover to be turned entirely over against the opposite leaf, so as to lie flat thereon. This result is accomplished by means of the broad flexible piece or joint I), which enables either cover to be turned entirely over and to lie fiat upon the opposite one, as above described, while the strip B assists in holding the manuscript or paper in place and affords by means of the holes therein and the fastenings d a means readily of securing the manuscript or paper used in the covers.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A reversible cover for manuscriptbooks, both leaves of which have a rigid or nonfiexible portion A, a perforated stiff strip B, extended flexible portions 1) between the portions A and B, these strips being connected by a flexible back, the flexible portion b having a length allowing either cover to be turned entirely over upon and to lie fiat against or under the opposite cover, and the perforations in the said strips coinciding with each other and adapted to receive fastenings for holding in such cover interposed leaves of paper correspondingly perforated.
2. The described temporary cover for manuscripts, adapted to hold sheets unattached to each other, consisting of the two non-flexible portions A A, connected together by an extended flexible portion having the two narrow stiff cross-strips B, placed apart from each other near the back of the cover and leaving between such strips and the rigid parts A a long flexible portion, permitting each leaf of the cover to be turned over to the opposite of its inclosed book and to lie underneath the same, and whereby the book may with equal facility be written in at front or back, the same set of sheets thus serving as two independent books.
3. The described cover having the two rigid leaves, the two long flexible portions, one for each leaf, the narrow stifi perforated cross strips, one for each leaf, and the short flexible portion between said strips and constituting the back, in combination with a set of independent sheets having perforations corresponding with those in such strips and with fasteners adapted to be passed through all these perforations and serving to hold the cover and sheets together, the combination permitting the writing at will in either end of the book or upon either side of any leaf, while both leaves of the cover lie underneath, and also permitting the ready Withdrawal of each and every sheet.
