Description

C. W. HILL.
BOOK-COVERS. No.183,oo3. Patented Oct.10,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
CHARLES W. HILL, OF WEST MEBIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 183,003, dated October 10, 1876; application filed December 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HILL, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of books, albums, miniature-casings, and the like which are provided with an inclosing-band around the edge of one of the covers for the purpose of protecting the edges of the leaves, tablets, or plates of the book or casing, its object being to so construct said inclosing-band that the leaves or tablets may be readily manipulated when the book or casing is open and it consists in dividing the band at or near the junction of the cover and connecting piece or back of the book, in order that the cover and the portion of the band attached thereto may be thrown back clear of the leaves when the book or casing is opened, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my invention, in which a a represent the covers of the book or casing, and b the connecting piece or back, to which said covers and the leaves or tablets c are secured. The said covers and connecting piece or back may be constructed of the ordinary materials employed in book making,'-'or of wood, metal, or other suitable material. The letters at 11 represent the inclosing-band surrounding the edges of the leaves or tablets. The band is divided or cut transversely or obliquely across from the point at which the cover is attached to the back or connecting-piece, one portion, d,
of said band being secured to one of the covers, the other portion d being attached to the connecting piece or back. The letter 0 represents a small flange or band attached to the cover a, which is adapted to fit within the band (1 when the book or casing is closed, and hold the covers together; and the letters f f represent two slots in said flange, adapted to set over the projections g g, or the inside of the band d, to assist in holding the parts together.
The leaves or tablets a may be secured or bound between the covers in the ordinary manner, or otherwise secured within the casing in such manner as to fold or pack neatly into the book or casing when the same is closed, and conceal and protect the edges of the leaves.
What 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the cover of an album and the flexible connecting-piece to which they are attached, of the inclosing-bands d and 0, divided at or near their junction with the back, and adapted to fold together and protect the leaves of the album, substantially as herein described and shown.
2. In combination with the bands 41 and e, the slots f and projections g on said bands, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Dated at Meriden this 17th day of November, 1875.
CHARLES W. HILL.
