' y FILING oEnE'conDs, LETTERS, AND OTHERv DOCUMENTS.
a subject of His Majesty the King of Engl V, land, residing at 107 Castle street, Battersea Parkin the county of London, Kingdom of ngland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with I the lining of Records, Letters, and other Documents, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in, or connected with the filing of records, letters and other documents.
The object of the invention is to provide loose-leafbooks, files and the like having rings, prongs or other like leaf-retainingv devices Vwith improved means to prevent the loose leaves or papers filed therein from jamming on said rings, prongs or other leaf,- retaining devices and the consequent fouls ing of the `covers of the book, iile orthe like which would'tend t0 prevent closing of the same, and the leaves or papers from tearing on said rings, prongs or devices at their perforations or slots; and to guide the leaves-or papers smoothly along said rings, prongs or the like when the book or t the like is being opened and closed.
.A convenient manner ofcarrying out the invention is hereinafter described with reference to the: accompanying drawings in Awhichz Figure 1 is a cross section on the line 1-1 ogt' Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan on a reduced siale, showing two of the improved devices itted to a convenient form of loose-leaf book having two outer covers and provided with removable-rings fitted into a solid slotted strip on the back of the book. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional viewof a loose leaf V book illustrating the manner of hinging the leaf retaining members tothe covers. Figs.
4 and 5 are .letali perspective views partly A in section, of slot-ted leaf lifting members provided with wires or pinspassed through loops on the said members for retaining the same on the leaf retaining rings.
According to the invention a loose-leaf book, file or the like is fitted with one or more hinged devices which are mounted on one, two or more of the leaf-retaining rings, prongs or the like in such manner that when the book, file or the like is closed the device or devices operate to lift and push the leaves Specification of LettersPatent.l Patented une 1915. y application med march 2s, 1914. serial No. 8263509.`
'or papersfiledjon said rings, pr'ongs or theI like on and along the 'same for the purposes above mentioned. These leaf-lifting devices may comprise, as shownv in the drawings, two inside lcovers e'ach formed of an inner strip12 and'an outer flap 13 which are Vhinged together at 11 and perforated or slotted at 15 to enable them to be mounted `or"the "like, which latter may be of any constructlon and shape and permanently or removably fitted inside the book, file or the "on one, two'v or more of the rings, prongs like and either to the'back or to one' cover f of theV latter as desired. The slots or perforations 15 in the inside covers 12-13 are ofa correlative size, Vnumber and positionwith those in the papers. The leaf-retain- .ing devices shown in the drawings are inthe form of sectional rings 7 which are removperipheries of the rings 7 and open out away from the back 16 by the leverage of the inner strips 12, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and consequently push and lift the leaves or papers in the book along and on the rings and prevent wedging of the same inside the book andfouling of the outer covers 11 of the latter which would tend to prevent closing of the book, and cause wearing and'tearing of the perl-orations punched in theleaves or papers. l` he leaf-lifters 12-13 also enable the book. ile or the like to be opened and closed quickly and smoothly, and large and thick books, files and the like to be used.
The leaf-'lifters 12-13 may each be formed with a single rowl of slots 18 and 19 insteadof with two rows of perforations as shown in Figs. 1 and 2`of the drawing,v and be retained on the` leaf-retaining devices by means of pins or wires passed through loops or the like formedon said lifters and through said devices.
In Fig. et of the drawing the slotted member .12 is provided with alined rings or loops 20 through which passes a wire or pin 21, while in Fig. 5 the slotted member 13 is ably fitted in a slotted member v16 fixed to I as shown at 6 in or the like,
provided with loops 22 located at opposite sides of the slots and receiving short pins 23.
The inner edges of the strips 1*?. of the leaf-lifters 12-13 may be adapted to rest against ridges or other like raised parts such the drawings, or said strips may be directly and permanently or detachably hinged to the book, file or the like by a fiexible strip 24. The flexible strip 24, which is preferably double to embrace the outer edge of the member 13, as shown, is secured to the same and to the top surface of the back of the book by adhesive material or other means.
Instead of thevwide covers as shown in the drawings the leaf-lifters may be in the form of narrow strips or levers similarly hinged together and each mounted on, or fitted to, or linked with one or more of the leaf-retaining devices, and be adapted to act in like manner yto the covers, and one, two or more of these levers may be used at a time.
The flaps 13 may be of various sizes in relation to the covers 11 when outer covers are used, and the size andY form of the complete lifters, particularly the strips l2 thereof, depend upon the thickness of the book, file the size of the rings, prongs or other leaf-retaining devices therein, and the number of leaves or papers filed or to be filed. rIhus the thicker the book, file or the like, thev larger the leaf-retaining devices and the greater the lift required, the wider will be the strips 12 and the greater the leverage obtained thereby.
The leaf-lifting covers, strips or levers may be made of millboard fiber, metal or other material or 'a combination of mate 'rials, Aand be covered'with cloth, paper, or
other suitable material.
Means are provided whereby the inner and outer members of the leaf-lifters are maintained slightly separated when the book, lile or the like is fully open, and
whereby the lifters commence said book, file or the .like starts to close. For
this purpose the top surface of the back 16 may be sloped asshownin the drawings, or
I strips or levers may be 'open by tight, or 1n other convenient manner. holes or slots formed'in the lifters may be studs or other projections may be fitted on said back. The two members of the leaf lifter may be made so as to tend to spring making the covering cloth a lirtle eyeleted with metal or other material.
