Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the same reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawings, l have shown at A a brief case or paper holder having two body portions of and b with one of which is coi'inected an end flap 0, said body portions being joined by a median portion (Z at which the body is folded together so as to one we papers or other contents between such body portions (5 and b, a fastening device consisting of members 12 and 13 being provided upon the flap c and the body member a respectively. B designates a perforating device adapted to be mounted in connection with the case 11, and serving also, if desired, as fastening means 18 hereinafter described, and is used for perforating the papers or the like 1 which are to be held grouped together in the paper or brief case or holder 11 by a binder member e, of which a plurality may be provided, each to be held, rcleasabl y, to the case or binder or holder A at the median portion (Z by one of a plurality 01? laps 15 which may be secured in the holder A at such median portions (Z in any preferred manner, being spaced somewhat apart to accon'unodate groups oi? papers to be held by the respective binder members 0 01'? which one is shown in Figure l. The brief cat paper case or holder A may be provided upon the body portions 0; and Z), at the sides, with flaps 16 to be turned inwardly within the holder A to overlap the papers or the like l t positioned or held therein. Likewise the case or holder A may be provided with straps l7'to be passed around the case or holder A when it closed together, as shown in Figure 2, the end portions oi? sec 1 straps being detachably secured together by suitable devices, as at 18.
Each of the binder members 6 comprise a suitable elongated clip, preferably con ing of a strip 19 of llex'ble material bent centrally along its greater dimension so as to embrace between it the papers 1i which are to be held by such binder member. At spaced points, securing devices f are mount ed upon the clip or tolced strip 15), the same being adapted to cooperate with a string, cord or other similar device 9', prelierably having end pieces 20 whereby they may be passed readily through the 1 crlora tions 21 in the sheets or papers or the li 14-, each end portion of such string or the like being secured in connection with one of the securing devices An ordinary shoe string will satisfactorily serve tor the de vice g. Such string or cord or the like g is provided at each end with the free end portion mentioned, the next portion thereof passes through an opening 2:2 in the lower portion of the clip or strip 19, as at 22, and then extends diagonally under the lower iiap of such clip 19, to-wit, the hi p other than the one upon which the securing device mounted, being there suitably 'laslen d to such under llap, as at 22 and thence passes through an opening 22 in the median portion of the clip 19; thence being passed within the told of the clip or strip 19, as at 22 for a portion of the length of the scouring device f, thence being passed through an openin Q2 and extended exteriorly of the clip or strip 19, at its median portion, as at 22 and thus constituting the middle portion of such string or cord y lioth end portions of the string or cord are arranged and secured and applied and utilized in the same manner. After the free end portion is brought through the perforations 21 in the sheets or papers or the like, it passed through a tapered slot 23 in the scouring device 7'', which latter pre lcrably consists of a sheetor strip Q l of pliable metal bent about the upper portion of the clip or strip 1!), at the edge thereof, and suitably secured thereto, as by binding the same lirmly to such strip 19 in pinching engagement by indenting the meta 21. it part of the metal sheet 2 1 is bent back upon itscl to form a spring tongue 2%", having its longer dimension ranging substant'ally at right angles to the slot 21, and lencath which the respective end portion ot the string or cord 9 is passed in binning, so that such string or cord is resiliently pinched between the metallic plate 2% and such tongue 24; thereon, releasably and ellectircly securing the respective end portion of the string or cord in position with the papers 1% held i'irmly within the binder member c. The binder members a u'iay be releasably or detaehably connected. with the holder or case A, at the median portion (Z, by means of the llaps l5 permanently secured to such case A at said median portion, by quick detachment means 71-, comprising, in one term, 'lient or yielding male members 25 and temale members 25"tor receiving the same, the male members being preferably mounted upon the flaps 15 and the female members upon the binder or binders e.
in Figure 5 is shown a modified form of the case or holder A, which may be similar to the term shown in the other ligurcs, with the exception that the median portion 03 at which the fold in the case occurs, is not provided with the fixed flaps 15, but ilaps 1.5" are provided mounted upon a flexible back strip 26 ranging transversely of the case or holder and detachably connected therewith by quick detachment means 71, similar to those shown in the other figures, and arranged at the edge portions of said strip 26, each of the flaps 15 having two male members 25 such as previously described and shown in the other figures for detachably entering female members 25" mounted upon the binder or clip 6 which is detachably applied to the respective flap by such quick detachment means having such two members. Thus a case or holder may be provided with members 25 of such quick detachment means, and the plurality of flaps 15 connected with such case in a group, by connecting the back strip 26 with the case through such quick detachment means, and the several binders 0 may by similar quick detachment means be connnected with or detached from such several flaps 15.
The combined perforator and fastener B comprises in the main a cage formed in two parts 27 and 28. The parts 27 and 28 are relatively movable and the part 27 is adapted to be secured to one of the strap ends 17 by means of rivets or otherwise, as shown at 29. The member 28 is hingedly connected with the member 27 through the medium of a suitable pin 30 which is maintained in position by means of lugs carried by the members 27 and 28. The member 28 likewise carries a plate 31 provided with an opening 32, the plate 31 being termed the punch plate and the member 27 carries a stud termed the punch stud, which stud may enter through the opening 32 when the part 28 is revolved about the hinge portion. The punch plate 31 may be U-shaped in form and spaced from the inner surface of the member 28 so that punchings may be readily removed from between the members 31 and 28. To secure the ends of the straps 17 to the device A, the opposite ends of the straps 17 as shown at 3st, carry members It which are adapted to cooperate with the cages The member 7 includes a plate 35 formed with a longitudinal slot 36, and adapted for sliding engagement on opposite sides of said plate 35, are members 37 and 38, said members 37 and 38 being interconnected by means of a stud 39 attached to said members 37 and 38 and passed through the slot 36 of the plate 35. The member 39 has an enlarged head so that the said member ma be readily grasped by the end of the finger. It rivet'member ll) spaced from the member 39 may likewise be provided for further ensuring proper connection and association between the members 37 and 38. The plate is formed with a slight bulge at ll, and provided with an opening 42 which may have the stud 33 passed therethrough when it is desired to lock the ends of the strap 17 in working relation. The members 37 and 38 are adapted to engage with the cage j, the member 38 engaging with the part 27 and particularly with a clip 43 associated therewith, while the member 37 is bent so as to engage with the member 31. The member 37 is provided with a flanged extremity ti-l received within a housing 45, said housing being associated with a portion of the plate 35, and said flange is directly acted upon by a compression spring 46 carried within said housing. Whcn it is desired to lock the ends of the strap 17 together the member 28 is raised into position sub stantially as shown in Figure 8, and the end of the finger contacts with the studs 39 and moves the members 37 and 38 backwardly away from the end of the plate so as to compress the spring 46. This will permit the stud 33 to be passed through the opening 42 in the plate 35; and a releasing of the stud 39 upon swinging the member 28 to what may be termed a closed position, as illustrated in Figure 10, will permit the member 38 to engage the bottom surface of the member -13 and likewise a surface of the member 31. A locked relation will then exist between the members j and 10. To release the strap ends, the operation just dessribed is repeated, save in reverse order, that is, the stud 39 is moved backwardly so as to release the members 3'? and 38 from ei ragement with the members 43 and 31 respectively.
()f course the separate binders 6 with their grouped papers may be detached from or applied to the case or holder A, as by the wick detachment means it, for the purpose of permanent filing or other disposition or for temporary use when in the holder.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in practicing the invention, in departure from the foregoing description and showing of the drawings, without departing from the true spirit of the invention.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A case or holder for papers, a paper binder, and means for detachably mounting the same therein; said means comprising a flap within the holder, and quick detachment means having members upon said binder and said flap respectively.
2. A case or holder for papers provided with a plurality of means for detachably mounting grouped papers therein; each of said means comprising a separate flap, a paoer binder, and means for detachably connecting each. binder with its flap.
A case for papers provided at a portion thereof with a flap, a binder member comprising a folded strip, means detachable engagement thereof with the said flap, and means for securing a sheet of paper within such binder member.
4:. A case for papers adapted to be folded at a median portion, a series of flaps associated with such case at such median portion, binder members comprising folded strips and means detachubly securing such binder members to the flaps.
5. A case for papers adapted to be folded at a portion thereof a series of flaps, means detachably securing such series of flaps to the case at such folded portion; binder members comprising folded strips and means for detachably associating same with the flaps, saidbinder members being adapted to hold papers or the like.
6. A case for papers adapted to be folded at a portion thereof, a series of flups,1neans detuchubly securing such series of flaps to the case at such folded portion; binder members comprising folded strips and means for detachably associating same with the flaps, and securing devices carried by the binder members for securing papers or the like to such binder members.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
