This invention relates to a fitting for a brief case or the like to receive and secure a loose-leaf book or other volume of papers within the case for easy use therewith.

An object of the invention is to provide a mounting within a brief case to which a loose-leaf volume or other similar bound group of papers may be removably secured.

Another object of the invention is to provide a unit comprising a carrying case and one or more loose-leaf volumes which may be selectively secured in or removed from the case and which may be conveniently used while in the case.

Another object is to provide means whereby eX- cessively large volumes may be secured within a leather brief case without damage to the case and which will permit the volume to be placed on one side while the brief case is open.

Another object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive easily manufactured base device which may be installed easily in most brief cases opening on three sides and which may be adapted to secure therein any bound group of papers of appropriate size.

Another object is to provide such a base which may be easily and instantly removed from the case when not required for use.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

The brief case with which the invention is particularly adapted for use as shown in the drawings comprises in part a front and back cover I and 2, a center section 3 connecting covers I and 2 along adjacent edges 4 and a fabric border piece 5 extending around the free edges of each cover. A slide fastener 6 along the edge of border 5 joins the borders of the covers I and 2 when closed to completely enclose and protect the papers carried within the case. A set of handles 'I may be provided for convenience in carrying the case.

Any type of binder carrying a quantity of paper and having a substantial back member may be secured within the case.

The binder shown is of a loose-leaf type and includes a back member 8 and two covers 9 to enclose the paper I0 therebetween. Back member 8 should be slightly longer than the height of the paper so that a shoulder II is presented at each end of member 8 to be engaged by the catch device to be described.

The base of the device for securing the binder in the case comprises a single flat piece of metal I2 having a longitudinal flange I3 along one side thereof. Base I2 is removably secured within the case by means of a hinge joint and hinge pin. One part I4 of the hinge joint is riveted to the outer side of ilange I3 and the complementary part I5 of the hinge joint is riveted or otherwise secured to the inside of cover I of the brief case so that the hinge axis of the joint is located near and parallel to the hinge joint between cover I and center section 3 of the brief case and along the joint between the base I 2 and flange I3.

The width of base I2 may vary according to the size of binders to be carried within the case and is less than the width of center section 3. The length should be just slightly longer than the corresponding dimension of the binder.

The binder is secured within the brief case with the back member 8 of the binder disposed flat against base I 2.

A U-shaped channel-like metal bracket I6 is riveted or welded on one side thereof along one end edge of base I2 and spaced from ange I3. The open side of bracket I6 faces inwardly on the top side of base I 2 to present a slot to receive one end of the back 8 of the binder.

A second bracket I'I is similarly disposed at the opposite end of base I2 and is pivotally secured thereto by a hinge joint.

One section I3 of the hinge joint is riveted to the end of base I2 with the hinge axis transversely disposed thereof. The other section I 9 is riveted to the L-shaped bracket I1 which extends upward and over base I2 to form with base I 2 a 3 slot to receive the opposite end of back 8 of the binder.

Bracket is biased in the position described by a spring bearing against the upright flange of an -shaped piece of metal 2l secured between hinge section i3 `and base I2.

A small metal handle 22 welded to the top of bracket i? and extending away from the bracket provides a handle for manipulating and opening the bracket I1 against the action of spring 29.

The binder is inserted within the case by placing one end of the back member 8 in the slot formed by bracket I0, depressing handle 22 to open bracket I'I, placing the back 8 upon the base E2 and releasing handle 22 so that brackets I6 and l1 engage the shoulders I I at the top and bottom, respectively, of the back member of the binder.

Almost any type of binder may be instantly removed or secured Within the case. The binders may be of any thickness up to that `accommodated by the brief case and are secured equally well so that the binder is always disposed against one side of the brief case. If the size of the binder permits, additional papers may be carried in the case on the other side of the brief case Without interference of the base device.

When the device is not in use it may be readily removed by withdrawing the hinge pin 23 of the hinge joint securing base i2 to cover i. A small extension 26 of one end of pin 23 bent 90 is provided for ease in inserting and withdrawing the pin.

Large binders carried within the case do not tend to break down the sides of the case. A reinorcing strip shown in dotted lines sewn within cover i opposite hinge section I5 and riveted together with the hinge section may be employed to further protect the leather cover against damage.

When the case is carried normally by the handles 'I the base i2 rests upon the center section 3 of the case and distributes the weight of the binder throughout the case.

When the brief case is opened and laid fiat upon a 4table the binder secured within the case may be also laid at upon the table with the title cover facing upward and the binder ready for use. 1n opening the binder the back of the binder will readily lie flat upon the table as in normal use by virtue of the hinge joint between base I2 and the case.

The device is easily manufactured `and installed in any brief case of the type described.

Various embodiments of the invention may be employed within the scope of the accompanying claim.

I claim:

A loose leaf holder case comprising a pair of covers pivotally joined to opposite edges of a back member for the case of a width determining the normal thickness of the case when closed, means secured to the coextensive edges of said covers for closing the case, a binder for paper having a fla-t back extending along the rear edges of paper mounted therein, an L-shaped base member for supporting the back of said binder within said case having a base plate for attachment; to said binder `and an upstanding plate normal to said base plate for pivotal connection with a cover of said case, an upstanding channel flange secured yacross one end of said base plate and adapted to receive one end of the back of said binder to secure the same against, displacement relative t0 said base plate, a hinged flange secured across the other end of said base plate and adapted t0 cooperate with said base plate to receive the other end of the back of said binder therebetween, resilient means normally holding said hinged flange in operative position for securing said binder in place while providing for manual retraction of the hinged flange for release of the binder, and a hinge for connecting said base member and a cover of said case having separate complementary pivot plates secured to the upstanding plate of said base member and to a cover of said case and having a removable hinge pin joining the pivot plates, said binder being removable from said base plate upon retraction of said hinged flange and said base plate being removable from said case with said binder upon removal of said hinge member', to clear the case for other use.
