Description

No. 890,076. PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908.
B. S. LOBDELL.
WRITING 0R DRAWING PACKET.
APPLICATION FILED 9110.11, 1907.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR nu: mum]: Psm'zas c0.. WASHINGTON, u. r:
UNITE PTET FFIUE.
BARTOW S. LOBDELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WRITING OR DRAWING PACKET.
Application filed December 11, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Brin'row S. LoBDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Writing or Drawing Packet for the Use of School Child ren, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement of a device to be used in teaching writing, or drawing to school children, and consists of an envelop with a pocket holding practice paper, copy, and a copy holder which in this instance is a part of the face of the envelop and is positioned at its mouth, extending from end to end of the same, the envelop and holder having contiguous portions cut away in order to expose the copy within the holder and the practice paper contained within the envelop, also for the further purpose of bringing the copy and practice paper in contact with each other and also to permit the transscription of the copy without the removal of either practice paper or copy.
The opening in the envelop below the copy within the copy holder permits the transcription of the copy without the removal of the practice paper from the envelop thereby protecting the practice paper from wear and tear and from becoming wrinkled, or soiled while in use, at the same time the envelop holds the practice paper, and the copy holder holds the copy in the same relative position and in contact with each other, an object greatly to be desired.
The combination of copy holder and copy, the practice paper and envelop when in use occupy much less desk room than required for a copy book, a desirable feature, and when not in use the device affords a compact and secure protection for its contents, thereby adding to its usefulness.
This device is more fully described in the following manner, and illustrated by the drawing submitted in which v Figure I. represents a sheet of flexible material cut ready for folding as hereinafter described. Fig. II. represents the combination of copy holder and envelop with copy and the practice paper within showing their relative positions and relation to each other. Fig. III. is a sectional view of Fig. II.
In Fig. I., 12 is the opening in the copy holder 21, Fig. II., which exposes thecopy 22, Fig. II. to view. The copy holder is Specification of Letters Patent.

formed in the following manner :First fold 14 along the dotted line at the end of 4, Fig. I., till it falls upon 4 and glue, or fasten by other means, then in the same manner fold 15 along the dotted line in 8 till it falls upon 8 and fasten, then fold 4 along the line 5*5 till 4 falls upon 8 this will leave, facing upwards, the back of 4 and 14 and will expose the margin 15 all of which may be given a coating of glue or some other fastening means, then fold along the line 7 7 the fold already made so that the back of 4 will fall upon 10 with the line 55 co-inciding with the line 9-9 and fasten; this will form a long, narrow receptacle closed at one end with an aperture at the other that will admit the copy for which this receptacle is designed to hold, the receptacle being the same size andshape of the bundle of copy. This holder will have the opening 12 along one of its longitudinal edges and the ends of the holder and the portion paralleling the opening 12 will cover the copy placed within and keep from view all of the copies save one which will be exposed through the opening 12, see 22 in Fig. II.
In Fig. I., 13 is an opening that by folding as above directed will be brought in alinement with and up to the copy holder formed as above stated and it is designed to be of the same size and form as the opening in the copy holder.
The envelop is formed as follows :In Fig. I. fold 18 along the dotted line 1 in the opposite direction from the folds in the copy holder till 18 falls upon 17 with the edges of 18 co-inciding with the dotted lines 3 and 3 then fold the margins 2 and 2 over and around the edges of 18 and glue, or otherwise fasten to 18. This will form a pocket designed for the reception and retention of practice paper which will be admitted through the mouth of the envelop which extends behind and along the upper edge of the copy holder which has now become a part of the face of the envelop and the opening 13 will expose enough of the surface of the practice paper for the transcription of the copy within the copy holder.
In Fig. II., 20 is the face of the envelop above mentioned and 21 is the copy holder which extends along the mouth of the envelop and 11 is the aperture in the end of the copy holder for the admission of copy 22 is a portion of a copy within the copy holder showing a copy along one of its longitudinal edges.
In Fig. 11., 23 is a portion of the practice paper Within the envelop which is exposed through the opening heretofore mentioned and by the same means is brought in contact with the copy within the copy holder 21 and by moving the practice paper upward, line by line, may be brought in contact with the copy without its removal from the copy holder or the removal of the practice paper from the envelop; 19 is the lap of the envelop which may be folded. along the mouth of the envelop at the upper edge of the copy holder till it falls upon the face of the envelop 20.
In Fig. 111., 18, 19, 20 and 21 give a sectional view of the corresponding parts in Fig. 11.
1 claim: In combination, a writing packet consisting of an envelop and copy holder, copy and practice paper, said copy holder being a long, narrow, thin receptacle closed at one end and open at the other and positioned at the mouth of the envelop extending from end to end of the same and having a portion along its edge save at the ends of said holder cut away and removed and a similar portion of the envelop contiguous to and parallel with the copy holder cut away and removed so that a copy and a sui'licient amount of practice paper for its transcription will be eX- posed, substai'itially as descrlbed.
