UNITED STATES PATENT Un tes.
WILLIAM H. KISTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED LETTER-SHEET AND ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,558, dated April 24, 1888.
Application filed February 28, 1887. Serial No. 229.186.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, \VILLIAM H. KISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Combined Letter-Sheets and Envelopes, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to combined lettersheets and envelopes; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrange ment of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilledin the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the blank sheet as it is formed and laid out for writing. Fig. 2 is a perspective View ofthe same, partly folded; and Fig. 3 is a similar view folded and sealed for mailing.
a represents the body of my lettersheet and envelope, which for convenience I prefer to provide with lines to guide the writing, though this is of course not a necessity. The upper end of this body is provided with a large sealingflap, b, provided with a line of gum or other sealing material, Z2, along the outer edge for a short distance, as in the drawings. End flaps, c c, are also provided, and it will be noted that I have by dotted lines indicated the lines upon which the sheet and its flaps are to be folded. Upon each side of the line of fold, between the sheet and its main flap and at equal distances from said line, I form a line of perforations, d d, the former being in the base of the flap and the latter across the head of the sheet and ex- (Xo model.)
tended through the small side flaps. At each end of this main folding'line and entirely between the two lines of perforations I place a small quantity of gum, e, as in Fig. 1.
In use the sheet is folded properly, the gum moistened, and the end flaps folded in on the main body, where they are secured by the corner seals and the large flap folded down and its central seal secured upon the main body. This, it will be noted, brings the two lines of perforations exactly over each other, and while the whole is securely held in transmission the upper edge is readily torn off, entirely removing the corner seals, that hold the side flaps, and leaving the whole free to be opened. This isdone at one motion, and no separate tearing of top and ends is necessary.
I have shown a perforated line to indicate the folding-line of each of the flaps; but these are simply a guide for accurate folding and are not intended to aid in opening or tearing off the flaps.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a letter-sheet and envelope, a main body formed with a top and two end flaps, and pro vided with two lines of perforations across the top of the sheet and base of the top flap at equal distances from the folding-line, and a central seal on the top (lap and two corner seals entirely between the perforated lines, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
