To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. LOEFFLER, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New Kensington, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have I invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to safety envelope, and the objects of my invention are to provide an envelop that cannot be surreptitiously opened without detection, and to provide an envelop that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and efficient for transmitting valuable matter through the mail. These and such other ob jects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the construction shown in the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein:

Fig. 1 is an enlarged cross sectional View taken on the line y-y of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line wm of Fig. 3.

The upper edge of the body 1 is provided with a top flap 12 adapted to be folded on the dot and dash line 13, said. top flap h, ving longitudinally arranged perforations lt adjacent to the outer edge thereof, and this outer edge is provided with tongues 15. The flap 12 upon one side is gumined, as at 16, and the tongues 15 are gummed on the opposite side from that of the flap 12.
The reference numeral 17 denotes a back piece corresponding in size to the body 1.
After the baclcpiece 17 is placed upon the body 1, the end flaps 2 are moistened, folded inwardly upon the back-piece 17 and sealed. The bottom flap 6 is then moistened as far as the perforations 9, and is then folded on the back-piece 17 and sealed thereto. The lower part of the flap Gfprevents the lower edges of the end flaps 2 from being tampered with, while the reduced portion of the flap 6 lies between the end flaps 2. The envelop is now ready to receive matter. To close the envelop the flap 12, is moistened, bent downwardly, the tongues thereof inserted in the slits or slots 10, the tongues moistened and the edge of the flap 6 moistened. After the flap 12 has been sealed upon the upper part of the back-piece 17, the edge of the flap (5 is sealed and then the tongues bent upwardly and sealed, as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
It will be noted that the perforations 5, l0, and 11 are located at such points where the envelop might be tampered with, and these perforations will assist in the detection of any tampering with the envelop, also facilitating the operation of opening the envelop with a knife.
The envelop can be made of paper, paperoid, or a similar-durable material.

An envelop of the type described, comprising a rectangular body, a back-piece mounted upon said body, end flaps carried by said body and adapted to be folded inwardly and sealed upon the outer side of said baclcpiece, a bottom flap adapted to be folded upwardly upon said back-piece and adhesively secured thereto, said bottom flap having slits formed therein adjacent to the upper edge, a top flap adapted to be folded downwardly upon said end flaps and said bottom flap and adhesively secured to said flaps, and tongues carried by the edge of said top flap and adapted to be placed in the slits of said bottom flap and folded upwardly and ad- SAMUEL I-I.
