Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lIll'. 19, 1912.
Application filed December 29, 1910. Serial No. 599,879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. VooLsmnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to envelops, and the objects of my invention are to provide a strong and durable safety envelop that cannot be opened without detection, and to provide an envelop that can be advantageously used for the transmission of valuable papers by mail or express service.
I attain the above objects by a construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of,
the drawing, in which Figure l is a plan of a blank from which the envelop is made, Fig. 2 is a plan of the envelop folded and sealed, Fig. 3 is a plan of the envelop unsealed, Fig. 4 is an enlarged vert-ical sectional view of the envelop, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the same.
An envelop in accordance with this invention comprises a rectangular body 1 having end flaps 2 adapted to be folded one upon the other upon the body 1, the end flaps 2 being of a length approximately that of the body 1 and having the upper and lower edges thereof tapered, as at 3. The end flaps 2 are provided with longitudinal slots 4L adapted to register when the flaps are folded upon the body 1.
The lower edge of the body has a bottom flap 5 adapted to be folded upon the end flaps 2, said bottom flap being approximately the same depth as the body 1 and having the edges thereof tapered, as at 6. The bottom flap 5 has a longitudinal slot 7 adapted to register with the slots 4 of the end lflaps 2.
The upper edge of the body 1 has a sealing flap 8 adapted to fold upon the bottom iiap 5, said sealing flap being gradually reduced to provide a tongue 9 having a head '10, said head having integral locking members 11, these members being slitted, as at 12 and held a slight distance from the tongue 9, whereby the members 11 are Tree to shift toward the tongue 9, as will presently appear. The inner side of the sealing flap S is gummed or provided with adhesive material as at 13 and the outer side of the tongue 9 is gummed or provided with adhesive material 14. After matter has been placed in the envelop the adhesive material 13 is moistened whereby the sealing flap 8 when closed will adhere to the upper edges of the end Ilaps 2 and to the edge of the bottorn flap 5. The adhesive material 14 is then moistened and the head 10 inserted in the slots 4 and 7 As the head enters these slots, the locking members 11 are shifted inwardly toward the tongue 9 until they have completely entered the slots and then said members assume their normal position and lock the tongue 9 within the envelop between the end flaps 2 and the body 1. The adhesive material lfl will adhere to the innermost end flap 2, and when suflicient pressure is brought to bear upon the envelop itl will be firmly sealed and the contents thereof cannot be surreptitiously removed without some part of the envelop being destroyed or injured.
The envelop can be made of paper, paperoid or other material and of various sizes.
