' WILLIE H. MULLINS, OF REPUBLICAN GROVE, VIRGINIA.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June s, 1909.
Application filed September 10, 1908. Serial No. 452,429.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIE H. MULLrNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Republican Grove, in the county of Halifax, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an envelop and more particularly to the class of envelops having securing flaps and a button fastener to more securely hold the envelop in a closed position.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an envelop adapted to receive articles, catalogues, circulars, letters or the like to be transported through the mails with perfect safety and comprises novel sealing flaps and a button-securing means to hold the envelop in a closed position and to make it possible to detect when the same has been tampered with by a malicious person in an e'Hort to get to the contents of the said envelop.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an envelo which is simple in construction, cheap, e' cient and inexpensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention, for example consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to such as come properly within the scope of the claims hereunto appended without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the back of the envelop and the same being closed and sealed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is an edge view with the end flaps spread apart. Fig. 4 is a perspective view looking toward the mouth of the envelop with the sealing flaps slightly separated from each other. 5 is a detail plan view of the slidable piece or section carried by the envelop.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings, the envelop comprises a body forming a front or address side 7 having along opposite longitudinal edges fiaps S and 9 the latter having their adjacent edges overlapped and sealed in the usual manner and forming the back of the envelop. Said front or address side 7 is provided at its lower end with a sealing flap 10 the latter folded upon and sealed to the flaps 8 and 9 forming the back of the envelop. Near the opposite end of the front or address side 7 is a transverse crease line forming a sealing section 12 having an inner gummed face 13 and provided at opposite edges with laterally projecting flaps 14 foldable upon crease lines 15 over and upon an inner piece or extension 16 secured to and carried by the front or address side 7 of the envelop. The sealing section 12 has a transverse crease line 17 upon which is folded an end sealing flap 18. The said flaps 8 and 9 are cut away as at 19 corresponding to the shape of the flaps 14 so as to permit the same to fold upon the inner piece or extension 16 in the manner as hereinafter described.
Secured t-o the back of the envelop centrally thereof by a split fastener or rivet 20 is a paste board disk forming a button 21 between which latter and the back of the envelo is disposed a slidable section orpiece 22 the atter containing a central elongated slot 23 intersecting a circular opening 24 and engaged by the split fastener or rivet 20 to guide the slidable section 22 when moved on the back of the envelop. Said slidable section 22 has a transverse crease line 25 along which is adapted to be folded an end closing flap 26 the same having an inner gumrned face 27 and is adapted to be folded over the l inner piece or extension 16 of the envelop. Integral with the slidable section 22 at opposite side edges thereof are sealing tongues 28 adapted to overlie and be sealed to the end sealing flap 18 when the latter is turned on its crease line 17 to overlie the slidable section 22 carried by the back of the envelop.
To close the envelop and seal the same the slidable section 22 is shifted upon the back of the envelop and the end closing flap 26 is turned in on its'crease line 25 to overlie and be sealed to the inner piece or extension 16 then the end sealing flap 18 is turned over upon its crease line 17 so as to overlie the slidable section 22 and the sealing tongues 28 are sealed to the outer face of the said sealing flap 18 and then the flaps 14 are tucked in by being folded on the crease lines 15 so as to lie between the slidable section 22 yand the inner piece or extension 1 6 to occupy the out away portions 19 formed in the flaps 8 and 9 of the envelop and in this manner the latter is held closed for the safe transportation of its contents.
What is claimed isl. An envelop comprising` a body having a front, side and a back, a lower sealing flap formed on the fron-t side and overlapping and sealed to the back, a sealing section at the opposite end of the front side and having an end sealing flap, an inner piece fixed to the front side at the inner face thereof, e slideble section mounted on the beck and having a closing` flap adapted to be folded over and sealed to the inner piece, and sealing' ,tongues on the slidable section7 the said end flap adapted to be folded over and sealed upon the slidable section, and engaged by the tongues.
2. An envelop comprising a body forming a front and back, a, lower sealing flap on the front and folduble over and sealed to the beck, a button carried by the back, fr slid able section guided by said button, e gunnned end closingl flap on said slidable section, :i gunnned section at the upper end of the front and having an end sealing` flap, an i1n1er piece secured to the inner face of the front, the end closing flap foldzible upon and sealed to the inner piece, the end flap foldeble upon und sealed to the slidiible section, edge flaps fold- :tble between the slidztble section und the back, and sealing tongues on the slidaible section and sealed to the outer fece of the end flap.
ln testimony whereof, l :rl'lix my signuture, in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIE H. M'UlililNS. lVitnesses STEPHEN H. HUBBAED, OVERTON C. HUBBARD.
