ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,000, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed October 3,1890. Serial No. 366,995. (No specimens.)
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, ALBERT TEACHER and BENJAMIN D. GIFFORD, both residing at Chatham, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in envelopes; and the object is to securely close the envelope against illegal inspection. \Ve attain this object in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the envelope as a blank. Fig. 2 is a view of the envelope unsealed. Fig. 3 illustrates the envelope sealed.
Similarletters referto similar partsthroughout the several views.
The end flap C, Fig. 1, folds in toward the front flap or face X on the lines eg. The end flap D, Fig. 1, folds in upon the flap Con the lines 6' g and is held in this position by the overlapping edge being coated with mueilage or other adhesive substance. The rear or outside flap B, in which are two horizontal parallel slots for the reception of the tongue A, is then folded in upon the flaps C and D, and the flap B, is secured in the above-described position upon the fiaps O and D by mucilage or other adhesive substance upon its outer edges. The prolongation E of the front flap or face X, carrying the tongue A, is coated upon its outer edges 6 d d c c (1' cl and seals upon the prolongation E, as shown in Fig. 3 by dotted lines.
It will be observed that as thus constructed the pocket of the envelope has an unbroken back formed by the overlapping end flaps, and that the slots in the rear flap and the slip F, formed thereby, under which the securingtongue is passed, together with the tongue, are altogether outside of said pocket.
\Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An envelope composed of a front flap or face having an elongated portion centrally, from which extends a tongue gumi'ned on its under side, end flaps folded inwardly on said front a rear flap sealed at its edges to the end flaps, and parallel slots in said rear flap forming a slip, whereby when the elongated part of the front flap is folded and scaled down the tongue may be passed through the slots and sealed to the underside of said elongated portion, substantially as described.
