APPLICATION FILED MAY 8. 1915.
Patented Sept. 28, 1915.
I COLUMBIA PLANMRAPH CO..WASH1NGTON. D. c.
IRENE A. BEAN, OF LONEPINE, ARKANSAS.
ENVELOP.
Application filed May 8, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRENE A. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lonepine, in the county of Johnson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7 This invention relates to safety envelops, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an envelop of simple construction, to be made of a single piece of paper, which cannot be opened without detection.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illus trated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the envelop is made looking at the rear side, Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the envelop with the side flaps folded inward, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the side flaps and bottom flap connected thereto, and folded inward, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 44-. of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion'of the envelop, which, of course, is rectangular in form, and 2 are the side flaps whichare foldable'upon the line 3. The side flaps 2 have a long inclined edge 4. The side flaps 2 are each provided with an inclined slit 5.
The lower flap 6 is provided with the oppositely disposed inclined edges 7, and integrally connected to each of the edges 7 is an arrow-shaped tongue 8 provided with a reduced neck 9 formed by the oppositely cutaway portion 10.
The sealing flap 11 is provided with an adhesive substance 12 applied along the oppositely inclined edges 13.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1915,
Serial No. 26,806.
The envelop blank is first folded on the dotted line 3 to position the side flaps 2 against thercar side of the body portion 1, after which the lower flap 6 is bent on the line a and the tongues 8 are inserted in the slits When the sealing flap 11 is folded on the line b, and the adhesive substance 12 is moistened, it will be seen that the edges 13 ofthe sealing flaps when the envelop is sealed lie parallel with the inclined edges 4 of the side flaps 2 and overlap said side flaps, with the rounded portion a of the sealing flap 11 engaging the bottom flap 6 of the envelop.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the envelop cannot be opened without detection, for the reason that in releasing-the sealing flap 11, the tongues 8 will be mutilated.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as de fined in the claim.
What is claimed is A safety envelop comprising a body portion, side flaps provided with long inclined upper edges, and having inclined slits formed in their lower edges, a bottom flap provided with a pair of oppositely arrowshaped tongues, said tongues having a reduced neck and cut away portion at the sides of said neck, and a sealing flap pro vided with an adhesive substance the inner face adapted to engage the side flaps and a portion of the bottom flap when assembled, said tongues being inserted in the inclined slits of the side flaps when in use.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRENE A. BEAN.
