ENVELOP.

Patented oct. 27, 190s,
Appiieon med February s, 1907. seal No. 356,059.
To all whom it may concern: f
Be it known thatI, HARRY L. 'Srntnn a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Charleroi, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve- Inents in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein` to the accompanying drawing.
This inventionrelates to envelops, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive envelop, that cannot be surreptitiously opened without detection. l'Io this end, I have devised an envelop made from a single piece of paper, or similar material, the envelop being provided with sealing flaps or tongues adapted to interlock with flaps cannot be opened without injuring the sealing flaps or tongues. I
The details of the construction entering into my invention will be hereinafter more out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this applicatlon,
like numerals of reference designate correspending parts throughout the several views, in Which:-
Figure 1 is a developed view of my improved envelop,Fi-g. 2'i`s a plan of the envelop. folded and sealed, Fig.l 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 4 is a plan of a portion of the envelop illustrating the sealing tongue provided with adhesive v material, Fig. 5 is a plan of the envelop folded and sealed by adhesive material, Fig. G is a longitudinal sectional view of the saine, Fig. 7 is a plan of a portion of the envelop ed to be sealed with Wax or similar material, Fig. 8 is a plan of a folded envelop as sealed by waX, and Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional vieW of the same.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved envelop of a piece of paper, paperoid or other suitable material, the envelop consisting of a body portion 1 having side flaps 2 and 3, said iiaps being approximately the same size as the body portion 1 of the envelop. The iiaps 2 and 3 are provided with a plurality of slits or slots 4, 5 and 6, disposed at right angles to the tongues 7 rand 8 the object of which will be presently described.
The ends of the body portion 1 are provided with tongues 7 and 8, the tongue 8 being preferably slightly longer than the tongue 7.
and to accomplish the same, the aps 2 and 3 are folded inwardly upon'the dotted lines 9 In Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing,'I have 'illustrated the envelop as folded and sealed,
and then the tongues 7 and 8 are folded in- 1 i wardly upon the dotted lines '10. -The tongue 7 is inserted in the registering slits or slots 4 and passed outwardy through the slits or slots 5, the end of the tongue 7 lying centrally upon the flaps 2 and 3, as designated at 11. The tongue 8 is then passed through the registering slots y6 and out through the registering slots 5, and then vi's inserted in the slots 5 on top of the tongue7. The tongues 7 and 8, flaps 2 and 3, land the bodyof the envelop andits contents may then be stitched together by a thread, cord or wire as at 12, thus firmly locking the contents within the envelop and preventing the tongues or' flaps from being opened Without marring or injuring the envelop.
In Figs. 4 to -inclusive, I have illustrated 80 the tongues 7' and 8 as being provided`with adhesive material 14, thel envelop being i folded as just described, and the tongue 7 adhesively secured to the envelop, and the tongue 8 adhesively secured to the tongue 7* i' between the slits or slots 4 and 5.
A still further manner of sealing the envelop is illustrated in Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive,
wherein I have provided the ton ue 8 with an opening A15, and after the enve op has been folded andthe ton ues positioned as'heretofore described, sea ing waX or a similar rnaterial 16 is placed upon the tongue8 over the g minor details of construction, asare permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. l
'What I claim and desire to secure by LetfE ters Patent, is I An envelop consisting of a body havin side flaps extending .from the longitudina edges thereof and having tongues of reduced Width projecting from the ends of the body", saidtongues being of unequallength, eachofy tongues also passe said side ilaps corresponding substantially in size with the body and each provided with a plurality of slits spaced apart at right angles to the body, the said side iaps adapted to be folded over onto said body and said tongues being each passed through e plurality of the slits in the side ila,A s with the longer of the through one of the slits `occupied by the shorter of said tongues, and
means extending through the tongues', the 10 side iaps and the body for seouring the parts againstopening Without destroying the same. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presenceof two Witnesses.
HARRY L? STALEY.
