ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec.l3, 1907.
Application filed July 1 1906. Serial No. 326,213-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK D. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alpena, in the county of Alpena, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to envelope, its object being the provision of novel details of construction for an envelop which will revent its being opened if sealed without etection.
The invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the envelo flattened out, showing its original shape efore Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the end flaps folded. Fig. 3 is a view of the rear side of the envelop completely folded. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a slightly modified construction. Fig. 5 is a plan view, showing the end and front flaps folded, and the rear flap partially folded.
Like parts are designated by corresponding reference numerals in the several views.
In the following detailed description, the slots which form the interlocking tongues and the tongues themselves, since they are disposed parallel with the side edges of the finished envelop, will be termed vertical, while the longitudinal flaps which are formed upon the free ends of the front and rear sections and are parallel with the upper and lower edges of the finished envelop, will be termed horizontal.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the envelop is shown as consisting of a front section 6 having side flaps 7, 7, each provided with a slit 8 near to and parallel with its free end. This slitted construction of the side flaps forms a pair of tongues 10, 10, said tongues being oppositely-disposed with respect to each other and overlapping when the side flaps are folded upon each other, as shown in Fig.2. The under face of each tongue is gummed, and each tongue is cemented thereby to the outer face of the body-portion of the opposite side flap.
, The rear section is cut-away at eachzside,
as at 13, and is provided at its free edge with a longitudinal flap 14, the under face of which is likewise gummed.
When the several parts of the envelop are folded together, the inner face of the rear section will completely cover the interlocking tongues 10 of, the side flaps, the rear section being gummed on its under face adjacent its side edges, thus holding said section in place. The flap 14 of the rear section is then folded over upon the upper portion of the front section, 6, thus completely sealing the envelop. A postage stamp placed as usual in the upper right-hand corner of the envelop will thus extend part way across the flap 14, any attempt to raise said flap necessitating removal or tearing of the stampf From the above it will be obvious that it will be impossible to unseal any of the envelop flaps without tearing or otherwise injuring the envelop, thus exposing any attempt to illegally open the envelop.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 4L and 5, the front section 6 is provided with a pair of longitudinal flaps 15 at its free end, which flaps are gummed on their inner faces, and are adapted to be folded over and cemented to'the upper portion of the side flaps, the longitudinal flap 14 of the rear section 11 being then folded over the upper portion of the front section, as in the preferred construction.
WVhat is claimed, is
1. An envelop comprising a front section;
side flaps foldable towards each otherand overlapping at their free ends, each side flap having a slit therein adjacent to and parallel with its free end forming a single tongue, said tongues extending in opposite directions from and interlocking with each other, the under face of each tongue being gummed and cemented to the outer face of the body portion of the other flap and a rear section having a longitudinal fiap at its free end adapted to be folded over the'upper portion of the front section, and cemented thereto, to seal the envelop, the inner face of the rear section being gummed at its side edges to the side flaps.
2. An envelop comprising a front section; side flaps foldable towards each other and overlapping at their free ends, each side fiap having a slit therein adjacent to and parallel with its free end forming a single tongue;
the under face of each tongue being gunnned I section, and cemented thereto, to seal the and cemented to the outer face of the body portion of the other side flap; the front section having a pair of longitudinal flaps 5 formed at its upper edges in spaced relation to each other, and adapted to be folded over the upper portion of the side flaps and ce- Inented thereto; and a rear section having a longitudinal flap at its free end adapted to be 10 folded over the upper portion of the front envelop, the inner face of the rear section being gurnmed at its side edges to the side flaps.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, 15 in presence of two Witnesses.
