LETTER-ENVELOPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,260, dated June 21, 1887.

Be it known that I, GUSTAV L. J AEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Letter-Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in letter-envelopes; and itconsists, essentially, in the combination, with a letter-sheet-, ofsat'etyflaps at the bottom of the sheet, a closing-flap at its top, and a gummed sealing-flap on one sideand adjacent to the closing flap, the sheet and flaps folding as hereinafter explained.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a face view of the letter-envelope unfolded. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are similar views illustrating the successive steps taken in folding the sheet. Fig. 5 is a face view showing the sheet folded. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section in the plane as m, Fig. 5.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the letter-sheet, from which project thesafety-tlaps a c, the closing-flap b, and the sealing-flap c. In the example shown in the drawings the safety-flaps are located at the bottom of the sheet, the closing-flap at the top thereof, and the sealing-fiap on one side, all such fiaps extending from or nearly from the centers of the respective sides to the corners. The closing and sealing flaps b and c are on adjacent sides of the sheet and extend to one and the same corner.

In closing the sheet it is first folded along the line 1 1, Fig. l, which lies in the longitudinal center of the sheet, and then along the line 2 2, Fig. 2, which is in the transverse center. The safety-flaps a a are now bent or folded downward along the line 3 3, Fig. 3, and the flap a then overlaps the portion d of the edge of the sheet, and the flap aenibraces or falls over the flap a. The closing-flap b is bent downward along the line 4 4, Fig. 1, into the position shown in Fig. 4, and then overlaps the safety-flaps and a portion of thesheet, Fig. 6. To complete the envelope the sealing-flap is bent over in the line 5 5, Fig. 4, and overlaps aportion of the closing-flap and a portion of the sheet. This sealing-flap is properly gummed on its edge, or on a portion of such edge, so that it can be secured to the closingflap and to the sheet.whereb v the sheet or envelope is securely closed. When the sheet is open, the gumined seal-flap is on one side thereof, so that if the sheet is placed within a copying-book the sealing-flap is left to protrude and the written matter can be copied, the gum on the seal-flap being outside of the copying-book. I

The letter-sheet can be formed without the safety-flap, if desired, the sheet being folded as before; but as the object of these flaps is to prevent the letter from being surreptitiously opened their use is of great importance in most cases. \Nithout said flaps it might be possible to draw downward the portions c e of the sheets which are not in contact with the sealing-flap and to read the matter contained thereon. Since the safety flap a is folded over the edge d of the sheet and the flap a over flap a, and both are held down by the closing and sealing flaps, it is impossible to withdraw the portions 6 6 without tearing off or mutilating the safety-flaps or other portions of the sheet. The letter-sheet can be easily and rapidly opened by severing the material along the bend of the sealing-flap.

It will be observed that the sheet presents its full and entire surface tobe written upon, the various flaps all being exterior of the sheet proper.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, substantially as shown and described, with a letter-sheet, of safetyflaps a a at the bottom of the sheet, a closingflap, b, at its top, and a gummed sealing-flap, c, on one side and adjacent to the closing-flap, the said sheet and flaps folding, as shown and described, to form the envelope.
