Description

CHARLES J. KASHNER, O13 CLARENDON, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY-{ENVELOP- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914:-
Application filed February 21, 1913. Serial No. 749,989;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. KAsHNnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarendon, in the county of lVarren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelope of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety envelops.
in object of this invention is the provision of an envelop of this character which is provided with a plurality of peculiarly arranged flaps so designed as to give notification of the fact that the same has been tam pered with.
Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the blank from which my improved envelop is constructed, showing the adhesive substance applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the envelop folded, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved safety envelop which consists of a body portion 11 which is of rectangular formation, having its side edges slightly longer than its end edges. Outer and inner side flaps 12 and 13 are secured, respectively, to the opposite side edges of the body portion, the
' same being of triangular formation, while the outer flap is slightly larger than the in ner flap so that when the same are folded upon the body portion, the edge of the outer flap will be projected slightly beyond the edge of the inner flap, providing a means for securing the same together by mucilage or other suitable sealing medium. These triangular flaps 12 and 13 are arranged with their bases parallel to the side edges of the body portion of the envelop, while their perpendiculars are parallel and flush with the opposite ends thereof.
A sealing flap lat is formed upon one end of the body portion 11 and is substantially rectangular in formation, having its opposite side edges concaved, as at 15, while its outer end is of a width substantially the same as-the width of the body portion having formed thereon a supplementary sealing flap 16 adapted, when folded, to engage the outer side of the body portion 11. This supplementary sealing flap 16 is formed with an extended tongue 17 arranged to engage the outer side of the body portion at the point upon which the customary stamp is affixed.
The inner faces of the sealing flaps 1 1 and 16 and tongue 17 are covered with adhesive substance, providing a means whereby the flap 14; can be secured to the outer sides of the [ laps 12 and 13 and the flap 16 and tongue 17 can be sealed to the outer side of the body portion of the envelop. It will be readily seen that when these flaps and tongue have been scaled and the stamp allixed so as to cover the tongue 17 and adjacent portions of the flap 16, that a safety envelop is provided which can not be unsealed without either removing the stamp or tearing the tongue, which defect in the latter, will give notification of the fact of unauthorized opening.
If desired, only the supplemental flap 16 and tongue 17 need be sealed, in which instance the contents of the envelop Will be held against any undesired displacement therefrom, yet in such position that they can be readily inspected. l/Vhen such is the case, only a one cent stamp need be applied to the envelop.
From the foregoing disclosures, it will be manifest that a safety envelop is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
An envelop comprising a body portion, a side flap extending from the said body portion at its upper edge, a. side flap extending from the said body portion at its lower edge, said side fiaps adapted to be folded one over the other in overlapping relation on the rear face of said body portion, a sealing flap extending from one end of said body portion adapted to be folded over the said side flaps subsequent to folding of the side flaps one upon the other, said sealing flap having both side edges concaved and being of greater length than said bodyportion in order to provide a supplemental sealing flap, said supplemental sealing flap being foldable over the. opposite end, edge of said body portion for engagement With the front face of said body portion, a tongue projecting from the supplemental f sealing flap for engagement With the front and said supplemental sealing flap being adapted for the adhesion of a stamp thereto. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
