ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 191%..
Application filed June 16, 1914-. Serial No. 84.5,469.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANK JARVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hauppauge, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to envelops.
The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of an envelop having an opening formed therein by a novel arrangement of the flaps of the envelop and means associated with the envelop for permitting the address on the contentsto be visible through the same.
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of an envelop formed from a blank that is simple in construction and one that can be easily assembled and when assembled can be placed on the market and sold at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following descriptiontaken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings z-Fig'ure 1 is a front elevational view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional. view taken on the line 2-2 of Fi g. 1, showing the top flap folded; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing the top flap folded; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the blank used in connection with my envelop.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a blank in this instance comprising a body 1, side flaps 2 and 3, bottom and top flaps 4 and 5, the flaps being foldable on the creases (l. The lower outer edges of the side flaps are provided with cut-out portions and the edges adjacent these cutout portions are arranged in spaced parallel relation with the side and lower edges of the body 1 and are further provided on their inner surface adjacent those portions with an adhesive material 7 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The bottom flap 4 extends a slight distance beyond the body 5 and is substantially similar in length as the reduced portions of the side flaps 2 and 3. The extreme lower edge is arranged in spaced parallel relation with the body and is gummed as at 8 on its under surface adjacent the edge for facilitating the securement of the same. The top flap is guinmed as at 9 on its inner surface adjacent its outer edge which is parallel to the body 1 and which when folded extends a slight distance between the horizontal edges formed when cutting the side flaps for a purpose to behereinafter d cribed.
In order that the address on the contents of a letter may be readily visible through the envelop I have provided a transparent member 10 and have associated the same with an opening 11 formed by the flaps extending from the body.
In assembling the blank, I have placed the transparent member which" conforms substantially to the contour of the lower half of the body upon the latter and have dampened the bottom flap 4 and folded the same on the crease 6 and engaged the flap upon the transparent member. flap '2 is now dampened and the edges adjacent the cut-out portion are engaged upon the transparent member. The side flap 3 is now dampened and engaged upon the side flap 2 and the transparent member 10. By this arrangement it can easily be seen that the cut-out portions in the side flaps and the arrangement of the bottom flap therewith constitutes the opening 11 and when the contents are placed within the envelop the transparent member 10 permits the reading of the address thereon. in finally sealing the envelop, the top flap 9 is dampened, folded on the crease 6 and engaged about the horizontal edges formed by cutting the side flaps and upon the transparent member 10 and thus provides an efficient closure for the envelop as well as a protector forthe side flaps at this point where there is a possibility of them being torn.
The side Mid Although I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I desire to be understood that I am not limited to the exact details shown, the essential point of my invention being in the formation of alining cutout portions in the flaps and their arrangement with the bottom flap and the transparent member for affording an envelop that the address on the contents may be readily visible through the envelop. Great stress is laid on this arrangement together with the cooperation of the top flap for strengthening and protecting pur pended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus-fully described my invention, what I claim as new 'and'desir'e to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An envelop including a side, bottom and top flaps extending therefrom, a strip of transparent material disposed upon said body, said side and bottom flaps being cut away to provide an opening, said bottom flap being engaged upon said transparent strip, said side flaps being ar ranged in overlapped engagement and engaged upon said transparent strip and said body. having 4.
bottom flap, and said top fiap engageable upon said side flaps and the upper portion of said strip for protecting the side flaps and preventing accidental tearing of the same.
2. An envelop including a body having side, bottom and top fiaps extending there from, said side fiaps arovided with alining cut-out portions, said ottom flap extending a slight distance from the body, a rectangular transparent strip disposed upon the lower part of saidbody, said strip conforming substantially to the contour of the side and lower edges of the body and occupying substantially one half of the area at the i body, said side flaps being arranged in overlapped engagement, said bottom and side flaps being engaged upon said strip to form.
a transparent opening, and said top flap being engaged upon said side flaps and the upper portion of said strip for strengthening and protecting said side flaps and preventing the accidental tearing of the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
