Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application filed October 5, 1918. Serial No. 257,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnRoNA HOMENIUK, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at vVoodlight, Province of Saskatchewan, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in envelope, particularly to types adapted to be sent through the mails as containers for inclosures.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an envelop cut from a single blank and which cannot be opened after its original sealing except by tearing the same.
A further object is to provide an envelop of unusual strength, presenting no unusual appearance, and which can be cheaply manufactured.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing one side of the envelop blank.
Fig. 2 is a similar side elevational view, looking from the other side of the same blank.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view showing the blank in a partially folded position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the opposite side of the same part in a further folded position, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken through the envelop when completely folded, ready for mailing, the parts being shown in an exaggerated position in order to disclose the structure.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates one of the main portions of the blank, with which is formed a top folding flap 11, provided with an adhesive 12 along its upper curved marginal surface.
Upon one side of the body portion 10, divided by the folding line 15, is a side tab 18, the same being substantially rectangular, while upon the other side of the fold ing line 16 is an opposite body portion 20 forming the rear side of the envelop, the same being provided with a top folding tab 22 adapted to fold along the line 21, and integrally attached with the body 20. Beyond the folding line 23, is an end tab24,
covered with an adhesive 25 on the side opposite to the adhesive 12.
A longitudinal folding line 28 is formed at the bottom of the body 10, the same extending as at 27, through the opposite body 20, the folding lines 27 and 28 being substantially in register with the lower edge of the folding tab 24. This line is further extended on the opposite side, in the elongated tab 18, as at 30, while spaced from, and par allel below the folding lines 28 and 30 are similar folding lines 29 and 31, parallel with the base of the blank, for purposes which will hereinafter become more fully apparent.
It is to be noted that the lower part 32 of the body element 20 is substantially in register with the folding lines 29 and 31, the two body portions 10 and 20 being partially separated by a V-shaped cut 33 formed at their lower marginal edges in alinement with the folding line 16, while upon the opposite sides of the blank, from the adhesive 12, is applied a line of adhesive 35, extending between the folding lines 28 and 29 of the blank body 10, a similar line of adhesive 36 extending below the folding line 27 to the lower edge of the body element 20.
The blank having been cut to the shape indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and supplied with adhesive as at 12, 25, 35 and 36, the end tab 18is folded over the body portion 10 on the side neXt to the adhesive 12, the lower portions folded on the lines 28 and 30, and again folded on the lines 29 and 31, in such manner that the adhesive 35 is brought into contact with the portion 32 of the body element 20, the body element 20 is then folded along line 16 to overlap the part 18, while the adhesive 36 is engaged with the back of the portion 39 carrying the adhesive 35 the tab 2% being turned inward on the line 23, the adhesive 25 is caused to engage with the outer portion of the opposite tab 18, and the tab 22 closed after the contents have been inserted, and finally the gummed margin 12, of the tab 11, is secured in position so that the part 32, turned upwardly on the line 29, is received within the hook shaped structure comprised of the element bent on the lines 28 and 29 which in turn are received in the bent element formed by the bending lines 30 and 31, thus forming in effect an expansible envelop which due to the struc ture of the bottom folds, permits relatively large degree of expansion or com- Y pression suited to the articles within the container, which obviously cannot be opened without destroying the structure.
When the envelop hasbeen constructed as above described, the tabs 11 and 22 extending upwardly, the contents are entered, the tab 22 turned inwardly, and finally, the tab 11 secured in position thereover, and upon causing the gum 1 to adhere in position, any contents which may have been inserted may be securely contained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is V A blank for an envelop having two body portions, folding tabs formed with said portions adapted to foldinwardly and out-' wardly, one of said tabs having a marginal line of adhesives, long and short end tabs formed with said body portions, folding lines formed longitudinally through said body elements and one of said end tabs whereby portions of the blank may be turned reentrantly along its lower edges so that said body portions are interengaged one with the other, and with the longer of said tabs, and an adhesive along the marginal edges of said folded portions and along the surface ofsaid shorter tab whereby the envelopmay be secured in position.
In testimonywhereof I have affixed my signature. i
WERONA HOMENIUK.
