JULIA A. LUNDAY, 0F OPP, ALABAMA.
ENVELOP.
Application filed January 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, JULIA A. LUNDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Opp, in the county of Covington and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops, designed more particularly for the purpose of mailing second class postal matter, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an envelop of simple construction, and made from a single piece of paper which can be sealed by means of a separable fastener so that the envelop may be opened for inspection and closed again without mutilating the envelop.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illus trated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank for forming the envelop, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the envelop partially folded, Fig. 3 is a face view of the envelop folded, and sealed, Fig. t is a view of the rear portion of the envelop after it has been sealed. and made on a larger scale, Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion or address por tion of the envelop, and 2 designates the side portions. The body portion 1 and the side portions 2 are each provided with a V-shaped flap element 3. The body portions 1 are also provided with a tongue 4. The side portions 2 are each provided with a transverse slot 5 to receive the flaps 3, and one of the side portions 2 is provided with a similar slot 6 near the tongue end thereof, and this side port-ion is also provided with. mucilage or other adhesive substance 7 on the outer edge thereof.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. let, 1915.
Serial No. 1,838.
The envelop is formed by folding one side portion 2 on the line a and folding the other side portion 2 on the line I) and uniting this by means of the adhesive substance 7 to the side of the envelop. The flaps 3 are all bent on the line a, and inserted in the slots 5. An eyelet S isinserted through the flap portions and through the side portions as shown in Fig. 4; and upset upon the opposite side of the envelop. Connected to the tongue 4 is a separable member 9 of the fastener adapted to engage the eyelet 8 and to permit the tongue 4; to be disconnected whenever desired. In sealing the envelop the tongue 4 is first passed underneath the band 10 and the member 9 is then connected to the eyelet 8.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that an envelop made in accordance with this invention can be opened and closed and used several times without mutilation.
Various changes in the details of con struction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventi on as defined in the claim.
Vhat is claimed is:
An envelop comprising a body portion, side portions provided on each side of said body portion, said side portions and body portion each provided at one of their ends with sealing flaps, the opposite end of the body portion being provided with an elongated tongue, one of said side portions having a transverse slot therein adjacent one end thereof, the opposite side portion provided with two transversely extending slots adjacent each of its ends, an evelet adapted to extend through said sealing flaps in the side and body portion, a fastener fitted in the outer end of the tongue adapted to fit into the evelet to hold said envelop in a folded position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
