APPLICATION FILED FEB. 4. 191a.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
ADA LYES, OF PAEROA, NEW ZEALAND.
'ENVELOP.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. February 4, 1918. Serial No. 215,302.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ADA Lyns, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and residing at Corbett street, Paeroa, in the Pro vincial District of Auckland, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelops used for holding letters and the like while passing through the post, and provides an envelop of very simple construction which cannot be surreptitiously opened, and at the same time can be readily opened by an authorized person.
The envelop comprises a blank adapted to be folded, so that the longitudinal edges of the two side flaps of the blank meet between the longitudinal edges of the finished envelop. A strip at one end of the body and side flaps of the blank is coated with gum or the like adhesive matter. The other end of the blank is formed with an integral tongue and end flap, the inner surfaces of which are coated with adhesive. The total length of the tongue and end flap is equal to the length of the envelop. A line of perforations is made, immediately within the adhesive strip, and another line of perforations is made at a corresponding distance from.
the end of the tongue.
The invention may be conveniently and advantageously carried into effect as shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1, is a plan of a blank for making the envelop,
Fig. 2, is a plan showing the sides of the sheet folded, and
Fig. 3, is a plan of the back of the own plete envelop.
The blank 1 comprises a body portion 1 provided at its side edges with contiguous side flapsQ which are adapted to be folded along the lines 2 and 3 on to the body portion 1*, so that the longitudinal edges 4 and 5 meet between the sides edges 2 of the envelop as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A strip 6 extending across one end of the body portion and side flaps is coated with gum or other similar adhesive matter. An end flap 7 is contiguous with one end of the body 1 and is adapted to be folded along a line 8 on to the folded side flaps 2 The flap 7 has a longitudinally extending integral tongue 9. The total length of the fiap 7 and tongue 9 is equal to the length of the envelop. A line of perforations 10 is made across the tongue, and at a distance from the end thereof equal to the width of the strip 6. A line of perforations 11 extends across. one
:end of the body portion and side flaps just within the strip (3, so that when the tongue and end flap are folded upon the envelop, the line of perforations 10 coincides with the line of perforations 11.
In folding the envelop, the blank 1, is folded along the lines 2 and 3 as shown in Fig. 2. The gum on the flap 7 and tongue 9 is then moistened, and the said flap and tongue are folded upon the side flaps of the envelop, to which they adhere. The adhesive on the strip 6 is then moistened and the side flaps made to adhere to the body portion, after a letter or the like has been placed in the envelop.
The envelop is readily opened by tearing along the lines of perforation 10 and 11.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided an improved form of envelop which cannot readily be opened surreptitiously, but which may be easily opened by the authorized person. By providing the line of perforations adjacent the adhesive on the strip 6, it will be seen, that if an attempt is made to open the envelop by inserting an instrument between the free ends of the side flaps and body portion, the material between the perforation will part and cause a rupture of the envelop. This rupture will furnish a visible indication that the envelop has been tampered with.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. An envelop comprising a body portion provided at one end with a strip of adhesive and at its opposite end with an end flap hav ing a longitudinally extending tongue, the end flap and tongue combined being of a length equal to the length of the body portion, side flaps contiguous with the side edges of the body portion, folded over upon the body portion and having their longitudinal edges meeting between the side edges of the envelop, and adhesive provided upon the inner surfaces of said end flap and tongue, said end flap and tongue being folded over upon the side flaps and being secured thereto by the adhesive on the end flap and tongue.
2. An envelop comprising a body portion provided at its side edges with contiguous side flaps which are folded over upon the body portion and the longitudinal edges of Patented Get. 22, 1918.-
which meet between the side edges of the en velop, a strip of adhesive arranged on the inner surfaces of the body portion and side flaps at one end of the same, an end flap contiguous with one end of the body portion and having a tongue, said end flap and tongue being provided on their inner surfaces with adhesive and being folded over ,upon the folded side flaps and secured thereto by the adhesive on the end flap and tongue, and a'line of perforations crossing Copies of this patent may be obtained for the side flaps and body portion of the envelop near said strip for use in opening the envelop.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses. 7
