To all whom it may concern: p v
Be it known that I, CHARLES Gane/ANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Safety-Envelop; Vand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
The present invention relates tocerta-in new and useful improvements in safetyV envelops, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can not be opened without detection after it has once been sealed. Y
Further Vobjects 'of the `invention are'to provide a safety envelop which can vbe manu# factured at a very slight increase in cost over the ordinary envelop, which can be sealed without diiiiculty, which has the same exterior appearance as an ordinary envelop, and which will resist all attempts to open the same without mutilation after being once sealed.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certainnovel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a safety envelop constructed in accordance with the invention, all of the flaps being swung upwardly into an open position. Fig. l2 is a transverse sectional View through the safety envelop, the iiaps being shown in an open position. Fig. 3 ,is a. similar view, the flaps being closed and the envelop being sealed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following descriptionV and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
For the purpose of illustration the invention is shown as applied to an envelop of the conventional construction, said envelop including a frontl upon which the address is adaptedto be written, a back 2, and a main sealing flap 3 which is integral with ing'flap. 3, so that it can be readily sealed aftergbeing fi-rst moistened in the usual manner. The mouth of the envelop is also provided with a pair of auxiliary tissue paper Eiaps 4 and which are secured to the'front and back respectively of the envelop, and
are adapted to-'be folded overthe upper edge ofv thel letter and secured by adhesive to the opposite side of the envelop, before Vclosing the envelop with vthe main sealing 'iap 3.l These interior tissue paper flaps 4 Vand-5 have a delicate'texture and are very easily' torn, so that it4 would be'impossiblev to obtain access tothe letter without tearing and mutilating the interior tissue paper flaps, even though the main sealing flap 3 might by some chance be successfully opened. The tissue paper flap 5 is permanently connected at 5b to theupper edge of the back 2 of the envelop, extending the full length' thereof, and fittingkagainst the outer face thereof. The upper end of the tissue paper fiap 5 has a layer of adhesive 5aM applied to the outer face thereof, said adhesive being adapted to be employed for securing the fiap to the ,inner face of the front l' of theV envelop when it is folded over the upper edge of the letter. The other tissue paper Hap 4 is secured at 4b to the upper edge of the front l of the envelop, extending the full length of the envelopand tting against the inner face of the front. A layer of adhesive 4iL isapplied to the projecting portion of the flap 4, said adhesive Ibeing utilized for sticking the iiap to the back 2, after the letter is in position Vwithin the envelop and the other tissue paper flap 5 has been sealed in the manner previously Vindicated'. The main sealing Hap 3 is then closed, said iap 3 being considerably larger than the flap 4, so-as to completely cover the same. The tissue paper flaps are thus completely concealed when the envelop ,is sealed, thereby giving the envelop the same exterior appearance as an ordinary envelop. |I he layer of adhesive 3a on the main sealing flap prefer- 4 when the envelop is sealed, thereby making it practicallycertain that any -elfort to lift the main sealing flap 3 will result in tearing the -tissue paper iap. The tissue paper flap 4L may also have lines or characters 6 printed upon the outer face thereof in some form of soluble ink. Any attempt to open the flaps by the use of steam would then cause the ink to smudge and spread in such a manner as to clearly indicate that the envelop had been tampered with, even though by some possibility the adhesive might be softened and the flap raised without tearing.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent7 is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a safety envelop Vincluding a -body formed with an integral main sealing flap, and a pair of opposed auxiliary tissue paper flaps secured to opposite edges of the mouth of the body portion vand extending the full length thereof, said tissue paper flaps being adapted to be folded over each other and secured to opposite sides o-f the envelop and being concealed by the Vmain sealing flap when the envelop is sealed,
said main sealing flap being provided with a layer of adhesive which extends over a suiiciently large area to engage one of the tissue envelop,
paper Haps, as well as the back of the envelop.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a safety envelop includinga body formed with an integral main sealing flap, and a pair of opposed auxiliary tissue paper flaps secured to opposite edges of the mouth of the envelop and extending the full length of the said tissue paper flaps being adapted to be folded over each other and secured to opposite sides of the envelop and being concealed by the main sealing flap when the envelop is sea-led, one of the tissue paper flaps having characters printed therein with soluble ink which will smear upon the application of steam or moisture, and the main sealing flap being provided with a layer of adhesive which extends over a sufficiently large area to engage the tissue paper iap as well as the back of the envelop.
