To all ywhom z5 may concer/n Be it known that I, CARRIE M. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and l entirely sealed and also is of construction that by simply altering the manner of closing the same will be sufliciently sealed to retain the parts in their proper relation for transit, at the same time leaving a portion of the closure unsealed as required under the rulings in relation to second-class matter.

The objects in view are to provide a construction in which the parts may be quickly folded and elfectually sealed, that will present a pleasing appearance and show at a glance if any attempt has been made to open or break the seals thereof.

A further object is to provide a doubly sealed construction wherein two sealing surfaces are provided, both of which must be broken to permit the entire disclosure of the contents.

Another object in view is to provide a construction in which the blank may be economically cut from the stock with as little waste as possible.

Finally, a construction is provided in which the only projecting flaps or extensions beyond the edges of the body of the sheet which forms the surface on which the printed or written matter is placed, may, if the article is to be inserted into a typewriter be doubled back and held in this position by the operator during the initial insertion of the sheet into the typewriter and there are no additional flaps farther down on the sheet to interfere with the typewriting operation since the remainder of the sheet presents the same outline as the ordinary letter or bill-head.

These and further objects in view will be pointed out in the following specification and claims and any minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.,

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the blank partly folded and having one cerner of the body of the sheet turned back to more fully illustrate the parts. Fig. 2 is a slightly enlarged rear elevation of the combined bill or letter-head and envelop showing its parts in sealed position. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4, of Fig. 2.

Reference being had to the drawings in which similar numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures thereof. As shown in Fig. l, 1 designates the body portion of a letter-head which may be with the exception of projections or liaps similar to the ordinary letter-head and may be, as indicated, printed in any preferred manner.

Sealing flaps 2, 3 and 4 are provided at the upper end of the sheet, and, as indicated in broken lines at a, b, c and d, when the article is folded for transit on the lines a, b, c and d, will present, the outline of the ordinary envelop.

The wings 2 and 3 form the end closure members and are, as shown, the width at their base of the folded article and taper more or less toward their outer ends which are provided with shoulders 5 and tongues 6.

The flap 4 which has the outline of the ordinary sealing flap of an envelop extends entirely across the upper end of the sheet at its base and is tapered, as shown, and is provided with slits 7 through which tongues 6 of the end flaps are inserted when the parts are folded. On the outer extreme end of flap 4, as shown at 8, sealing gum is applied and on one of the tongues 6, as shown at 9, the surface is also gummed.

By this construction, it will be clear that the blank, as shown in Fig. l, may be printed either as a letter-head or bill-head in the space within the broken lines a, Z), c and Z and on the reverse side thereof which forms the outer address receiving surface, the necessary return address may be printed which will give it all the appearance of the ordinary envelop.

If my improved article is to be inserted into a typewriter, the flaps@ and 3 may be doubled back and the sheet inserted into the machine which will bring said flaps 2 and 3 beneath the roller, in which position they will be held and the operator may proceed with the writing with no further interference than met with in the ordinary letter-head.

IVhen ready for mailing, the body l which may be of any preferred length may be folded to bring its dimensions within the outline of an ordinary envelop, as indicated by the lines a, o and cl. Flap 4 is doubled on line d and flap 2 with its tongue 6 is doubled on line a, said flap entering through the near slit 7 from beneath and across and down through the other slit 7, and at the same time flap 3 will be doubled on line l) and its tongue having the gummed face 9 inserted from beneath through the near slit 7 over the top of the tongue 6 of flap 2 and sealed to said tongue 6 of flap 2. Gummed surface 8 'of iiap a is then sealed to the portion of the body of the blank beneath it. In this manner, it will be seen that flap 3 and flap 2 are securely attached across the back and iiap 4 is securely attached at its outer end in such a manner as to eectually seal the parts as folded to prevent any disclosure of the contents of the combined article.

It will be noted that should the seal a-t S be accidentally broken, the sealing together of the ends of flaps 2 and 3 will prevent the opening of the parts, and again should the seal between the flaps 2 and 3 become broken and the sealing at the point S remain intact, the parts cannot be separated a sufficient distance to permit of any great amount of disclosure of the contents or printingthereon.v

It will be noted that the portion of the sealing flap it located between the slits 7 thereof when the parts are sealed is beneath the sealing tongues, @of the flaps 2 and 3, and in the event that it is desired to use the article for second-class purposes in which the sealing must not be entirely accomplished, it is onlyv necessary when the parts are assembled to insert tongue 6 of flap 3 through one of the slits 7 and seal same to the portion above referred to instead of to the'tongue 6 of flap 2. In this manner by inserting through slits 7 the tongues 6' of the end flaps `2 and 3v either one way or the other will form a closure either of a first or second-class character.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is l. A combined letter-head and envelop, consisting of a body portion having two or more superposed folds, side flaps folded thereon and having overlapping tongues, and a slitted end flap to receive said tongues and folded upon the side flaps with the slits therein disposed to overlie the overlapping tongues to permit each tongue being passed through both slits.

2. A combined letter-head and envelop, consisting of a body portion, side fiaps of lengths adapted, when folded upon the body portion, to terminally overlap and extend beyond a longitudinal median line of the body portion, and an end cover iiap having a slit located adjacent to said median line and adapted when the cover flap is folded to overlie and register with the terminals of the side flaps.

3. A combined letter-head and envelop, consisting of a. body portion, side flapsof lengths adapted, when folded upon the body portion, to terminally overlap and extend beyond a longitudinal median line of the body portion,y and an end cover ap having slits located adjacent to and on either side of said median line and adapted when the cover flap is folded to overlie and register with the terminals of the side flaps.

Ll. A combined letter-headl and envelop, consisting of a body portion having a plurality of superposed folds, a slittedy end flap folded upon the body portion with the slits therein disposed at opposite sides of the center of the body portion, side flaps of a length greater than one-half the width of the body port-ion adapted to be foldedl over the body portion and extend through said slits.
