Description

UNITED STATES FREDERICK A. NICHOLS, OF BROOKLYN,
PATENT OFFICE.
MASSACHUSETTS, A
CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION ENVELOP AND MESSAGE BLANK- Specification of Letters Patent. A pli ati fil d January 29, 1906. Serial No. 298,888-
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. NICHOLS, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Envelop and Messa e-Blank, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is toprovide an improved combination envelop and message or statement blank designed particular y for use by insurance com anies 1n sending out premium notices, by te egra hic companies, and by'business men or ouses in sending out bills, statements, and announcements of various kinds or classes, a further object being to provide a combination envelop and message or statement blank which may be conveniently folded into the form of an envelop and sealed after the message, bill, or, statement has been printed or Written thereon, the construction being such that when the blank has been folded into the form of an envelop and sealed the envelop may be opened and the message, bill, or statement at t e same time detached by simply pullin ofi a strip of the envelo from the body portion t forations.
This invention is an im rovement on that described and claimed in nited States Letwhich 1s separate ereof by lines of perters Patent No. 789,957, granted to William H. Bassinger, May 16, 1905, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank which I employ; Fig. 2, a back view of an'envelop formed from said blank; and-Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line-3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the envelop unsealed, the thickness of the envelop being also exaggerated so as to better show the construction.
In the practice of my invention I provide av blank (shown in Fig. 1) which is cut from any suitable paper or other material and comprises a body portion (1, provided at one side edge with a sealing-flap b, at the opposite which 'side edge with a folding member 0, and at each' end with an end flap d, and said sealingfiap b, foldin member a, and end flaps d are adapted to he folded along corresponding lines e, f, and g. The end flaps d are preferably tapered; but the bottom edges thereof adjacent to the body portion of the blank are preferably extended to the bottom edge of blank is rovided parallel with the foldinglinef an at a predetermined distance therefrom with a row of perforations h, and the folding member a is also provided parallel with said folding-line f and with the row of perforations h and at a predetermined distance therefrom with a similar row of perforations i. v
The folding member a is provided in the form of construction shown with a supplemental foldin member 0 adapted to be folded on a line 7', and said supplemental folding member 0 is of less width than the main part of said folding member, the width of the sup lemental folding member 0 being,
ly the same as the width of the substantia main folding member 0 between the row of perforations i and the folding-lines j.
In practice, supposing this device to be intended for the use of an insurance company in sending out premium-notices, the said notlces are rinted or written on either or both sides of the folding member 0 and on the supplemental fol g member, if the latter is'em ployed, and if the device is intended for use by a tele raphic company the blank message is rinte on the body or main portion of the fol ding member in the usual manner, and if the device is intended for use by business men, houses, or concerns in sending out announcements of any kind or class the announcement is similarly printed on the body portion of the folding member and on the supplemental part thereof, if the latter be employed.
It will be understood, of course, that the NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE address 1s printed or written on the body porfolded over the parts 0 and the sealing-flap b greater than the cost of ordinary envelops,
is then folded over the end flaps.
The sealing-flap b is provided parallel with its free edge with a row of perforations b forming a strip b which is gummed on the inner side thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, and the lines of perforations h and t form when the blank is folded as above described a narrow strip 7c at the bottom ed e of the envelop to which the strip b is scale in the operation of sealing the envelop. In folding the blank into an envelop and sealing it in the manner described the lines of perforations h, i, and d all register, and this forms a narrow strip m at the bottom ed e of the envelop which is separated from t e body thereof by said rows of perforations, and in opening the envelop al that is necessary is to take hold of one end of the strip m and pull it off, and this operation in addition to openin the envelop also detaches the folding mem%er on which the message, statement, or other information is placed, and said message, statement, or other information may be filed away and preserved independent of the envelop. If the body portion of the folding member only is employed, it will be seen that the operation 'of opening the envelop detaches said folding member and forms therefrom a cardwhich may be conveniently carried in the pocket or in a pocket-book, and this is also true if the part c of the folding member be employed, the se arate parts of said folding member being olded along the line j.
In the construction shown the perforations in the line h in the body of the envelop are extended at each end of said line into the end flaps d, the object of this being to facilitate the tearing off of the strip m, in which operation a portion of the end flaps are also tprn off if said end flaps are made as wide as the body portion of the blank, and the object of mak ng the end flaps adjacent to the body portlon perin said flaps is to enable the sealingstrrp 3 to be sealed to the end flaps as well as to the folding member, so as to prevent the pulling out of said end flaps.
It will be understood that when the blank is folded as shown in Fi 2 it forms a strong and compact envelop of t eusual shape which may be securely sealed in the usual manner and the cost of which is comparatively no rations,
member being as wide as said body portion and taand it will also be understood that the envelop maybe made of any desired size and of any preferred shape.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to ters Patent, is
1. A combination envelop and messageblank, comprising a body portion provi ed at one side edge with a sealing-flap, at the opposite side edge With a foldin side member, and at-the o posite ends wi h folding end flaps, the b0 y portion being rovided parallel with the folding side mem er and adj asecure by Letcent thereto with a row of perforations, and I the folding side member being provided par allel with the body portion and adjacent thereto with a corresponding row of perfoand the sealing-flap being also provided adjacent to its free edge with a row of perforations for forming a narrow strip which is gummed on its inner side, the rows of perforations in the body portion, folding side member and sealing-flap being adapted to register when the envelop is sealed, substantially as shown and described. j
2. A combination envelop and messageblank, comprising a body portion, a sealingflap at one side edge of the body portion, a foldingside member at the opposite side edge of the top portion, and folding end flaps, said body portion being provided adjacent to the folding-line of the side member and parallel therewith with a row of perforations which are extended into the end flaps, and said side rovided adjacent to the folding-line thereo and parallel therewith with a row of perforations, and the sealing-flap being provided adjacent to its free edge with a row of perforations forming a narrowstrip which is gummed on its inner side, the rows of perforations in the body portion, foldin side member and sealing-flap being adapte to register when the envelop is sealed, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of January, 1906.
