SAFETY-ENVELOP.
amet,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 191th Application filed December 31, 1913. Serial No. 809,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER Fonoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concordia, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a-full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to safety envelops and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide an envelop of simple construction which cannot be opened without mut1- lation of certain parts of the envelop which would indicate that the envelop had been tampered with by an unauthorized person.
Another object of the invention is to provide an envelop which will not require an excessive amount of paper stock in cutting the blank, and which will be provided with a plurality of tongues for locking the parts together, said tongues being gummed upon one side to be secured to the inner side of the envelop to render the envelop safe against surreptitious opening of the envelop.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the inner side of the blank from which the envelop is made, Fig. 2 is a rear side elevation of the envelop with such parts broken away to show the gummed side of the front, and Fig. 3 is a central section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the outer surface of the body of the envelop, which is substantially rectangular in plan, and 2 is the inner face of the body of the envelop. Each of the side flaps 3 is provided with an inwardly curved upper edge 4 and an outwardly curved lower edge 5, and outwardly converging slots 6 and 7 formed adjacent the upper and lower edges, respectively.
The lower flap 8 is provided with sitely disposed inwardly curved edges 9, and a plain angular end 10. Outwardly diverging tongues 10 extend angularly from the edges 9, said tongues being gummed upon oppotheir front sides as shown at 11. A transverse slot 12' is formed in the tongue 8.
The sealing flap 13 is provided with diverging tongues 14:, and a sealing tongue 15 around the outer edges of the inner surface of the flap 8, an adhesive 16 is applied, and around the outer surface of the inner side of the sealingflap 13, similar adhesive 17 is applied.
The flaps are folded upon the lines a, b, c and cl. When the flaps 3 are folded inwardly the lower flap 8 is folded upwardly and the'tongues 10 are moistened upon the outer side and the gummed edge 16 of the flap 8 is also moistened. The tongues 10 are inserted in the slot 7 and when the flap 8 is pressed down upon the flap 3 the en velop is ready for the insertion of the letter or other communication. When the sealing flap 13 is folded on the line 03 the side flaps 3 are folded inward and the tongues 14 are moistened upon the front sides and inserted in the slots 6. The gum 17 is moistened and the gum c on the sealing tongue 15 is also moistened and when it is inserted in the slot 12 a slight pressure will hold all the parts together with the gummed portions entirely out of contact with the inolosure in the envelop, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawing.
An envelop made in accordance with this invention cannot be opened without mutilation of the tongues 10 or 14:, and cannot be tampered with without discovery by the authorized person.
What is claimed is An envelop comprising a body portion, Side flaps adapted to be folded inwardly upon said body portion, each of said flaps having a pair of outwardly converging slots,
a lower flap carried by the lower end of said body portion adapted to be folded over the side flaps and having gum upon its inner surface adapted to be secured to said side flaps, a pair of diverging tongues carried by said lower flap adapted to be inserted in the slots adjacent the lower edges of the side flaps and having gum upon the outer surfaces thereof adapted to be secured to the inner surfaces of the side flaps, a sealing flap carried by the upper edge of the body portion, a pair of outwardly diverging tongues carried by the sealing flap having having gum upon the outer surface thereof 10 gumupon the outer surfaces thereof adapted adapted to be secured to the inner surface to be secured to the inner surfaces of the of the lower flap. side flaps when said sealing flap is closed, In testimony whereof I affix my signature 5 said bottom flap having a slot extending in in presence of two Witnesses.
parallel relation to the line of fold of the OLIVER FORGUE. sealing flap, and a tongue carried by the Witnesses:
central portion of the sealing flapadapted JOHN V. SWnNsoN,
to be inserted in the last mentioned slot and WILLIAM A. LANDES.
