I r I WILLIAM W. L. LONGTOFT, OF'LOOGOOTEE, INDIANA.
ENVELOPY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 7, 1908.
application filed March 2a, 1906. Serial No. 308,483.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. L. LONG- rorr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Loogootee inthe county of Martin and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
his invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in envelops, and the invention has for its primary object to rovide a simple and inexpensive envelop, w ich cannot be opened without detection.
My-invention aims to provide an envelop particularly adapted for transmitting pa ers and letters through the mails as first diass matter, and in this connection, I have devised novel means for sealing the envelop whereby the same cannot be surreptitiously opened or tampered with.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and referring to the drawing accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the'several views, in wlnch:
Figure 1 is a developed view of my improved envelop, Fig. 2 is a plan of the envelop in an open position, Fig. 3 is a similar view of the envelop, closed sealed position.
To put my invention intopracticeyl construct my improved envelop of abody portion 1 having end flaps 2, 2, a rear flap 3 and a sealin flap 4, all of said flaps being intoral witi said body portion and ada tedto old thereon. The end flaps 2, 2 are s ightlv tapering in form and are adapted to fold upon the body portion 1 to form the inclosure for a letter or like missive. The rear flap 3 tapers and has its edges provided with adhesive material 5, 5, as ordinary mucilage. The tapering end of the rear flap 3 is cut and sheared to form a transverse slit or slot 6 enlarged at the ends as at 6, and the material from which the envelop is formed that borders upon the slit or slot 6 is pressed up to form a raised portion 7, said raised portion being surrounded by adhesive nmterial 8, 8. The adhesive material 5, 5 and 8, 8 is moistened whereby the rear flap 3 may be secured to the end flaps 2, 2. is now in position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, ready to receive a letter or similar paper. The sealing flap 4, is tapering in form and is provided with a perforated tongue 9 which is provided with adhesive material 10, also the edges of the sealing flap as at 11, 11. After the letter or similar paper has been laced in the envelop, the adesive materia of the sealing flap and the tongue 9 is moistened and the tongue 9 inserted in the slot or slit 6, said tongue seating in the raised portion 7 of the rear flap 3. The sealing flap4, together with the tongue is pressedinto engagement with the flaps 2, 2 and 3 until said sealin flap has become firmly engaged with said aps.
By the construction of my improved envelop, it will be impossible for the end flaps 2, 2 to be opened and should the sealing flap or the flap 3 be tampered with, it may be easily detected, as to open the sealing flap 4 the perforations of the ton ue 9 must be broken, as said tongue is firm y sealed within the raised portion 7 of the flap 3 and easy access cannot be had thereto.
From the fore oing description taken in connection with t e drawings, it will be noted that I have devised a simple and inexpensive envelop which can be manufactured of various kinds of paper or material and easily sealed, when it is desired to use the envelop.
Such chan es in the construction of my improved envelop as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What .I claim and desire to secure by Let- The envelop proximate y central y thereof a tongue hav mg one face provided with an adhesive ma terial and further so arated from the seal ng flap by a line of pe oration and said scaling flap further having a strip of adhesive mastrip of adhesive material thereon to the end terlal extending throughout its edge on one fia, s and rear flaps. 10 face, the said tongue ada ted to be inserted n testimony whereof I efiix my, signature through said slit into sei pocket and be sein the preselnlce of two witnesses.
5 cured to the end flaps, said rear fla adapted WILLIAM W. L. LONGTOFT.
to be secured to the endfiaps by t e strip of Witnesses: adhesive material upon the rear flap and said FRANK HARDMAN,
sealing flap adapted t0 be secured by the T. A. WRIGHT.
