Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PosT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond duLac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops;

My invention relates to envelops for holdmg letters, papers, etc. for storage or transportation through the mails and also adapted to be used as an office file for holding legal papers, etc.

The invention consists in providing an envelop of the usual form and construction with a notch in one end which extends only partially across said end and is not closed when the envelop is sealed. The unsevered portions of the end of the envelop at each side of the notch retain the contents during transportation, whereas by simply cutting said uns'evered portions -the envelop is trans formed into an ordinary ollieejliling jacket from which papers can be readily removed by thethumb and finger placed in the notch.

The invention further consists in the fea tures of' construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and specified'in the claims.

In the accompanying drawlng, 1llustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention:

Figure 1 shows the rear face of the envelop with the flap raised. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the flap sealed and the portions ofv the end at each side of the notch severed as when the envelop is to be used for filing purposes, and Figs. 3 and 4 are broken and sec tional views respectively of a modification.

In the drawing 1 designates the envelop which is provided with the usual filling open ing 2 on one side and the flap 3 for closing and sealing said opening. A notch 4, preforably sei'ni-circular in form, is cut in one end of the envelopleaving'the remainder of said end unsevered. Said notch is preferably arranged in the eenterof the end and is about the-size usually found in small office filing jackets.

While I have shown the filling opening'and flap on one side, it is obvious that they may be arranged at the, end opposite the notch Without departing from the. spirit or sacrificingthe advantages of my invention. It will be noted that the unsevered po tions of the notched end of the envelop will effectively prevent the removal of the contents from that end of the envelop until they are cut. Anyone receiving one of these envelope through the mails sealed can quickly remove the-contents by simply slitting or cutting the unsevered portions of the notched end and I afterward use the envelop for lilin g purposes.

The envelop ispretjerably made of strong material so that it'will be suited for this p rpose. It will also be observed that a knife, paper cutter or other instrument may be readily inserted in the notch for the purpose of'opening the envelop by cutting the pertions of the end at each sideof said notch.

As illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4,.the envelop may be made of thinner paper or other material and have the edge of its notched end reinforced by one or more extra thicknesses of material 5 pasted or otherwise secured thereto. not turn or extend around the notched end of the envelo but leave theportion thereof at each side oi easily severed or cut in opening the envelop.
