Be it known that l, RUDOLPH UROHNIAK, a subject of the Emileror ofAustria, and a resident of West lis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful llmprovements'in Envelop-Openers, of. which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in envelop openers. f

In opening ordinary envelops it fis the common practice to either tear of one edge portion of the envelop or to insert the end of a knife into-the envelop and cut through one edge thereof to gain access to 'the con- 'i tents of the envelop. Either plan isobjectionable on account of theliability of tearing or cutting the paper within the-envelop1 and in cases where the envelop contains checks lor other valuable papers the damage may causey a serious loss.

1t is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome .the before mentioned objectionable features and provide an en velop which maybe easily opened without the use of a knife or without tearing off the i edge portion of the envelop, thus obviating the liability of. injuring or destroying the contents of the envelop.

A further object of the invention is to vprovidean envelop with means whereby it may be opened in a very Simple manner and which means 1s of simple construction and does not materially increase the cost of thev 4 envelops.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved envelopvopener and its parts vand combinations as set forth in the claiml and all equivalents thereof.

In the accompanying drawing in which -the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all ofthe views:

Referring to the drawing thenumeral 5 indicates an envelop of ordinary form which is provided with an opening lthread 6 extending within thel envelop and along one of the end creases 7 formed by the folded end flaps 8 of the envelop. The opening thread comprises the projecting portion orhandle 9, vthe angular extending anchored portion 10 and the medial cutting portion 11. The cutting portion 11 is lightly secured to the portion of the envelop forming'the end groove 7 by glue or other adhesive material 12 to hold the thread in position and to also Apermit it to be easily pulled laterally away from the paper in cutting through the edge 13 thereof. The anchored portion 10 of the thread is firmly attached to the adjacent right angled inner portion of the envelop by glue or adhesive material 12 so that the said end portion will not be pulled away from said inner portion while the handle -portion ofthe thread is being pulled to out the edge portion of the envelop-to be opened.

The modified form shown in Fig. 3 differs from the principal form only in that the thread is adapted to open the end portion of the envelop instead of the upper edge portionas in Fig. 1 form.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the envelop is of very simple construction and may be-easily opened without the liability of injuring the contents of the envelop.
