ENVELOP OPENER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB-2h 191s.

GIUSEPPE CAMILLIERI, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
ENVELOIP-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 191?.
Application filed February 21, 1916. Serial No. 79,709.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIUsEPrn GAMILLIERI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Envelop-Openers, of which the following is a.
specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap and convenient device for opening sealed envelops without injuring the contents of such envelops, and my said device is illustrated in and by the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a perspective view of an envelop opener embodying my present improvement as it appears when constructed from a single piece of sheet metal.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which said opener is to be conformed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1 showing the blank partly bent and, in Fig. 4 I have shown a similar view of the blank as it appears when completely formed into an envelop opener.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of my said opener as it appears when made mainly of wood. Fig. 6 is an end view of said wooden opener and Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5.
Briefly described, my improved letter opener consists of a body portion which is provided with a grooved or slotted way along which an envelop may be slid, and a knife fixedly located in said groove, in the path traveled by the envelop and near the bottom of the groove, so that a very narrow strip will be cleanly cut from the edge of the envelop as the latter slides along the groove. Said opener may be very cheaply made of a single piece of sheet steel or it may be made with a wooden body portion having mounted therein a steel knife.
Referring now to the annexed drawings, the letter 42 indicates the body of the opener,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for the same being formed as two plates that are suitably spaced apart, as at Z) to provide a groove in which an envelop may be slid; the upper plate being relatively narrower than the lower plate so that the edge portion of the envelop may be more conveniently entered in the groove. The letter 0 denotes a knife of steel that is fixed in the body a near the bottom of the groove 5 and in parallel relation to the length of the complete opener.
In the opener illustrated in Fig. 5 the knife is set into the body and is riveted, or otherwise fixedly secured, to said body. In the opener illustrated in Fig. 1 the knife is an integral part of the body; that is to say, the body and the knife are first punched from sheet steel, in substantially the form seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and with a portion of the plate punched and struck up to provide a tongue which then stands at a right angle to the plate and whose outer or free edge is beveled and sharpened to provide the knife 0.
The plate is also punched to provide a slit cl in which the point of the knife enters when the plate is folded down, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 2, 3, and 4: of the drawings. By thus producing the complete device, from a single sheet of metal the cost of production is greatly reduced in comparison with the opener having a wooden body and an inserted knife but for some purposes I regard the latter construction as desirable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent An envelop opener conformed from a single sheet of metal folded to provide two plates that are spaced apart from each other, one of said plates having a knife blade punched therefrom and the companion plate having an opening adapted to receive and support the free end of said knife.
