To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Oscnn A. OLSGN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Thread Cutter and Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a thread cutter and holder of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, comprising a resilient device adapted to be mounted in the hole 01 a spool without the use of any attachments except the frictional engagement of the parts of the cutter, and having members projecting from the spool and forming guide members for thread and having cutting edges for cutting the thread, and clamping members for holding the spool end of the cut thread.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference character j to indicate generally a spool on which is wound thread 72,.
My improved thread cutter comprises a single strip of resilient material bent to "form a portion 0, substantially elliptical in form. At one end of the portion 0, the ends of the strip are extended away from the elliptical portion in parallel relation to each other forming a fiat, straight, parallel portion 9.
At the upper ends of the portion 9, the ends of the strip are curved outwardly at f forming guide lips a and a One of the portions 9 has an opening cut through it to receive a tongue 6 cut from the opposite member 9 and extended through said open ing.
The parts are so arranged'and constructed that when the portion 0 is inserted into the opening 6 in the spool j, the edges of the portions 0 will frictionally engage the wall of the spool around said opening and be held in proper position.
Formed at thelower endsot' the portions g are opposite shoulders i which fit against the end of the spool and limit the inner movement of the device into the opening in the spool. The portions 9 are formed with sharpened edges (Z and (Z The upper edge ofthe tongue I) is also preferably sharpened.
In the practical use of my device, the thread it is drawn between the portions 9. The members a and a serve as guides to make it easy to slide the thread between the members g.
In the use of the device, the tongue 6 forms a cutting device by which the thread may be cut off, and the resiliency of the parts holds the members 9 together for a considerable distance, so that they are in vertical parallel position. If desired, the thread can be drawn against the edges (Z or (Z for cutting the thread.
On account of the fact that the members 9 are pressed together by the resiliency of the device when it is installed in the spool, the members g serve to hold the loose end A; of the thread after it has been out, thereby to a great extent preventing the unwinding of the thread from the spool, and making it easy to find the loose end.
The device is of very simple and inexpensive construction and can be made by the use of dies or the like at a small expense.
Some changes may be made in the con struction and arrangement of the parts of my device, without departing from the essential features and purposes of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by the claims of the patent to be issued upon said application any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within the scope of my claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A thread cutter and endholder, comprising a single strip folded over at its lower end, and having spaced resilient arms extending upwardly from said lower end and designed to be received within and frictionally engage a spool, parallel arms ex tending upwardly from said first arms and designed to be pressed together in vertical position when the device is assembled in a spool, said last described arms having sharp edges, and having at their upper ends outwardly spread portions forming guide members.
2. A thread cutter and end holder comprising a single strip folded over at its lower end, and having spaced resilient arms extending upwardly from said lower end and designed to be received within and frictionally engage a spool, parallel arms extending upwardly from said first arms and designed to be pressed together in vertical position when the device is assembled in a spool, said last described arms having sharp edges, andhaving at their upper ends outwardly spread portions forming guide members, one of said second arms having an opening therein, the other of said second arms having a tongue formed therefrom and extended through said opening, said tongue having a sharpened upper edge.
3. A thread cutter and'holder comprising 7 of the thread on the spool, said last described arms having sharp edges, and having at their upper ends outwardly spread portions forming guide.members, said device having shoulders for limiting the inner movement of the device into a spool.
