SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,694, dated December 25, 1900.

To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. ULLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an envelop which may be opened very much more readily than those ordinarily constructed. To this end 1 form in the sealing-flap of the envelop an orifice through which may be inserted the blade of a knife or like instrument to cut open the envelop, and in order to make it more easy to insert the knife-blade I cut a notch in the back of the envelop just under the opening, so that the knife-blade will have a clear passage into the interior of the envelop.
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention,while the claim is a definition of the actual scope thereof.
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a rear view of an envelop unsealed,showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the envelop sealed, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
a indicates the openingwhich is cut in the sealing-flap of the envelop. This opening will not be visible from the front of the envelop, and when the envelop is sealed the opening appears as a mere slit in the back or sealing flap.
1) indicates a notch which is cut in the back of the envelop and in such position that it lies directly under the opening a when the fiap is closed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The envelop thus constructed appears pre cisely the same as an ordinary envelop, and it may be very readily opened in the manner explained.
The invention is particularly advantageous when a large amount of mail is to be opened, in which case the letters are generally arranged in a pile with the backs upward, and when constructed according to my invention the envelops may be successively opened with great rapidity.
. By arranging the opening in the flap as shown I minimize the possibility of accidental tearing of the envelop at pointsv around the opening, because the flap is scaled down all around the opening a, which latter is thereby reinforced, and if a tear is started it will be confined to the immediate vicinity of the opening.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An envelop, havinga flap at the back thereof, which flap lies'over another part of the back of the envelop, said flap being formed with an opening, and the said other part of the back of the envelop over which part the flap lies being formed with a notch registering with the opening in the flap, and leading toward the edge of the envelop which is to be cut, whereby the instrument used in cutting the envelop may be entered through the opening and notch and conveniently engaged with the edge of the envelop.
