ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 15, 1907. Serial No. 362,558.
Patented Feb. o, 1909.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, LOUIS LEVY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Envelops, of which the fol owing is a specification.
My invention has for its primary object the provision of simple means through the medium of which an envelop can be opened without tearing or mutilating the contents thereof.
A further object resides in the provision of an improvement of-this character which can be readily applied to envelops now in common use.
A further object is to provide in conjunce tion with this envelop opening means an advertising agent which upon opening of the envelop will be drawn out in a manner which will attract the attention of the recipient of the letter.
With the above and other equally desirable objects inview, to be referred to as the description progresses, the invention resides in the construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter described and succinctly defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a plan view of an envelop constructed in accordance with my invention, said envelop being open so as to receive the letter or the like. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the closing flap sealed down and the opening cord having had one of its end portrons withdrawn as during the primary step in the opening operation, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the present invention removed from the envelop.
Referring now to the drawing by numerals of reference 1 indicates the body of an envelop of ordinary form having its upper portion open so that the letter 'can be inserted, and 2 indicates the sealing fla adapted to be folded down an sealed on body 1. Now in carrying out my invention I provide flap 2 on the line of its fold with openings, as 3 so that portions of the cutter which is cord 4, intermediate its ends will be wholly exposed so as to be readily grasped by the operator. Cutter cord 4 has its end portions, which are arranged within the bounds of the envelop, adhesively secured at 5 on the line of fold of flap 2.
Openings 3 are provided at points in proximity to the end portions of the cutter cord so that when the cord isgrasped through either of said openings, the adjacent end portion of the cord can be readily and quickly with drawn and the operator then grasping this free end portion will be enabled to quickly sever the flap 2 on its line of fold.
- I referably provide two openings 3 so that 1n the event of one being covered by the postage stamp, the other will be plainly in view.
When, by a quick movement the cutter cord is withdrawn, having severed flap 2 as previously described, card 7 is obvlously quickly drawn from the envelop and will'attract the attention of the operator so that any advertisement thereon will be read or noted by him.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with an envelop provided with an opening, a cutter cord secured in said envelop and extending across the opening, thereof so that it can be grasped and pulled to open the envelop, an advertising medium arranged in said envelop, and a flexible means secured to said advertising medium and connected to said cutter cord intermediate the ends thereof, whereby said,
in said envelo and extending across the Signed at Seattle, Washington this 5th opiening tlgareo a card arranged in said enday of March 1907.
ve op and sing spaced from said cutter cord,
and another cord connecting said card to LOUIS LEVY 5 said cutter cord, whereby said card will be Witnesses:
withdrawn from said envelop by said cutter W. L. SHANKs, cord. J. J. Goss.
