ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed April 28, 1914. Serial No. 835,034.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT B. DRYGAS and JOSEPH DRYGAS, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to envelope for use in insuring the safe transmission of correspondence through the mails and has for an object to provide an envelop of a simple construction, which can be cheaply manufactured and which cannot be tampered with for the purpose of removing the contents thereof without so mutilating or defacing the envelop as to escape the notice of the person receiving the mail.
The invention contemplates among other features the provision of an envelop which is preferably formed of a single piece of material such as paper or the like and which contemplates a structure that will be strong and durable and which can be readily sealed after the contents thereof have been properly arranged therein.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view looking at the rear of the envelop with the flap shown in open position, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the envelop when the flap is in closed and sealed position, Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical transverse sectional view taken through the envelop.
Referring more particularly to the. views, we provide an envelop body 10 having a flap 11 which is adapted to close the envelop body 10, said flap and envelop body being formed of a single piece of paper or other material with the envelop body arranged and constructed to provide reinforced transverse edges 12, these edges being formed by doubling portions of the material from which the envelop body is manufactured, upon themselves as will be clearly seen by referring to the views. Formed with the envelop body and constituting a part thereof is a back 13 formed with the back and along its free edge is a foldable strip 1d on which is bent upon the back 13 as shown, the said back having a gummed portion 15 and the foldable strip 14: being also provided with a gummed face 16.
Formed with the flap 11 and foldable thereon is a strip 17, said strip being formed by the free edge of the flap and adapted to be so folded that when the flap is arranged in closed position the foldable strip 14 of the back which has been previously moistened will be received between the strip 17 and the body of the flap 11 after which the flap together with the foldable strip 14: is pressed against the gummed portion 15 which has been previously moistened and which will thus secure the outer face of the strip 17 to the body of the envelop.
Now referring to the views it will be seen that when the envelop is folded as mentioned to seal the same the inner face of the strip 17 will adhere to the inner face of the strip 14 and the outer face of the strip 17 will adhere to the back 13 constituting a part of the body of the envelop. Thus there is provided a double seal for securing the flap 11 in sealed position and it will be apparent that with the double seal of the character described it will be impossible to unseal the flap by the sweating process or by cutting the flap, without so mutilating the double seal and flap as to prevent detection.
What is claimed is In an envelop, an envelop body having a gummed back, a flap foldable on the envelop body to close the same, a foldable strip formed with the back and extending transversely thereto, the said foldable strip having its inner face gummed and formed adjacent the gummed portion of the back, a foldable strip on the flap and extending transversely thereto, said foldable strip on the flap being adapted to be received between the foldable strip on the back and the gummed portion of the back and extend upwardly to have its free end lie along the line of formation of the foldable strip on the back wherebysaid foldable strip on the flap will lie between the foldable strip on the back and the envelop body, and reinforcing strips formed by bending the edges of the front over on to the back, With the foldable strip on the back adapted to he between the reinforcing strips and Which are adapted to be partially overlapped by the said flap When the same is secured in closed position.
In testimony whereof We afiix our signatures in presence of tWo Witnesses.
