Application led'Oetober'I2, 1907, Serial No. 397,178. Renewed; February 2, 1909 Serial No. 475,693.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JULIUs J. '.llrsi-ILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester, in the county of VJestchester, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in envelops and it has more particular reference to a safety envelop constructed with the purpose of preventing fraudulent manipulation, opening or tamper* ing with during its transmission through the mail. y
l In connection with an envelop ofthe above type, the invention aims as a primary object to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of features, to consti- `tute as an entirety, a novel sealing device.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description, in
` which reference is had to the accompanying drawings., forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating' similar parts, throughout the several views, wherein i Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the present envelop is formed. Fig. 2
is a plan view showing the blank partly folded. Fig. 3 is a 4rear elevation showing the envelop sealed. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 43.
In the accompanying drawings, the envelop blank is shown as comprising a body 5,
an upper flap 6, a lower flap 7 and side flaps 8 and 9. The flap `9 is constructed with a `tongue 10 projecting at right angles centrally from its upper edge and foldahle upon the inner face of said flap 9 along a line of scoring 11. The flap 9 is provided at a slight distance from its upper edge with a slotted opening 12 through which the tongue `10 is passed after having been folded, the
material between the line of scoring 11, and the opening 12 constituting a web 13 which overlies said tongue in the folded relation of the latter. The tongue 10 in its folded relation has its outer or exposed face preferably gummed` as at 14. The side flap 8 is constructed with a longitudinal slit 15 and the lower flap 7 is constructed with a longitudil nal slit 16, which, in the folded relation of the parts is coextensive and coincident with the slit 15. The upper flap 6 is formed centrally thereof with a projecting tongue 17 having its inner face gummed as at 18.
In using the envelop, the flap 9 is folded the flap 9, and the flap 7 is folded upon the flap 8, it being understood that the tongue 10 has been previously folded upon the line of scoring l] with its end portion inserted through the opening 12.
It is preferred to form the material struck out from the opening 12 as an auxiliary flap 10, which is` folded upon the outer face of the flap 9 along the lower edge of said opening 12 and which is gummed to adhere to the tongue 10 in the folded relation of the latter. TWhen the parts have been thus assembled, the letter or other matter to be mailed is placed in the pocket formed by the body 5 andthe several iaps folded thereupon and the flap 6 is then folded upon the flap 7 in which operation, the gummed surface 18 of the flap 17 having been previously moistened, the flap 17 is inserted inwardly through the slits 16 and 15 in their'coincident relation, until the end portion thereof overlaps the end portion of the flap 10, the gumming 18 causing the end portions of said respective flaps 17 and 10 to adhere to one another. It will thus be seen that any attempt to open the envelop will result in mutilating the same so that the attempt will be immediately discovered. Such mutilation will readily occur by virtue of the provision of the weakened web portion 13, the confines of which are indicated by dotted lines, and by virtue of the sealing of the flaps 10 and 10 to one another as well as of the sealing of the flaps 1 7 and 10 to one another, and of the engagement of the flaps 17 through the slits 16 and 15.
The invention is simple in its structural details, inexpensive to manufacture, and practical and eflicient in use.
Vllhat is claimed is:
An envelop of the type set forth, com rising a body portion provided with side aps, an upper flap and a lower flap, one of said side faps having formed centrally thereof and projecting from `its upper edge a tongue and having at some distance below said upper edge and in a line with said tongue, a slotted opening, said tongue being foldable upon the inner face of the side flap by which upon the body 5, the lflap 8 is folded upon` it is carried and being formed for insertion l signed to overlap and to be sealed to the pro- 10 through said slotted opening, the other side jeeting end portion of said first named tongue. ap and the lower ila being foldable upon In testimony whereof7 I affix my signature, said first named side ap and being formed in presence of two witnesses.
with coincident slits, the upper Hap being J-ULIUS J TISHLER formed with a projecting tongue having its inner fece gurnrned, said last named tongue Witnesses: being formed for insertion through said slits DAVID J. KELLY, Jr., in their coincident relation and being de- J. B. MONETT.
