Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, CAsIMrR PANEK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope, of which the following is a specification, referj ence being had therein to the accompanying drawing;
This invention relates to envelops, the object being to provide an envelop which cannot be opened surreptitiously Without detection. y
The invention consists of an envelop folded and gummed in such a manner as to prevent access to the letter or other inclosure without defacing or tearing the envelop.
The construction of the improved envelop will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and its features of novelty will be defined in the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which'the envelop is made. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the first step in folding the blank. ,Fig 3 is a plan view .showing the center ap of the envelop folded.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the side flaps in the folded and sealed position. Fig. 5 shows the envelop completely folded with the exception of the central sealing-flap. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the envelop when sealed for mailing. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section on the line x of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a section on the line y 'y of Fig. 6.
The reference-numeral 1 designates the front of the envelop provided with the usual sealing-hap 2. Extending from the lower edge of the front 1 is a section 3 of slightly less width than the front 1,'but corresponding thereto in length. From the ends of the front 1 and the section 3 extend side flaps 4, adapted to be folded on the lines 5, and said llaps 4 and the section 3 being adapted to be folded on the oppositely-disposed oblique lines 6, as will be further explained.
From the upper edges of the side flaps 4 project supplemental sealing-flaps 7, the upper edges of which are preferably curved in opposite directions, as shown.
The blank shown in Fig. 1 is first folded along the oppositely-disposed oblique lines 6, as shown in Fig. 2, and adjacent to the oblique edges thus formed the envelop is gummed, as shown at 9. This folding of the blank brings the lower portions 10 of the side flaps into position to form the back of the envelop. The depending triangular section 11 is then folded along the line 12 and sealed to the portions 10 of the side flaps, as shown in Fig. 3.
The triangular end sections 13, formed by the folding just described, (see Fig. 3,) are then folded inward on the lines 14 and also sealed upon the sections 10, as shown in Fig. 4, thus bringing the supplemental flaps 7 into register with the main sealing-flap 2.
The envelop is now ready to receive a letter or other inclosure. After the letter is inserted the supplemental ilaps 7, which are gummed along their outer edges, as at 15, are folded down over the upper edge of the letter and sealed upon the inner surface of the front 1., thus concealing the supplemental `llaps and giving the envelop the appearance of an ordinary unsealed envelop, as shown in Fig. 5. The sealing-flap 2 is then sealed, as illustrated in Fig. 6.
It will be apparent that access to the contents of the envelop cannot be had by unsealing the flap 2, since the supplemental flaps 7 are securely sealed to the front of the envelop, and this double sealing renders it practically impossible for an unauthorized person to tamper with the envelop without tearing or defacing it.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An envelop made from a blank comprising afront section provided with the usual sealing-Hap, a section extending from the lower edge of the front, side flaps extending from the ends of the front and the section below the front, and supplemental sealing-flaps extending fromthe upper edges of the side flaps, said blank being first folded along lines, extending obliquely from the center of the lower edge of the blank to points below the foldingline of the sealing-flap, to provide a back section for the envelop, and reinforcing triangular side and center flaps, gurnmed along their edges, then folded to seal the said triangular reinforcing-flaps upon the back, and to bring the supplemental sealing-flaps into register with the main sealing-flap.
