Be it known that i, HENRY F. Knonn, a citizen of the Uniti d States, residing at New Kensington, in the county of Nestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Thisinvention relates to improvennfnts in envelops and similar containers and more i'iaps protected so that theycannot be opened Without detection.

` The object of the invention is to provide. a simple and practical safet,Y envelop which may be produced at a comparatively small cost, Will be convenient to use and will he sure to show evidences-of a'fraudulent atteinpt at opening.

r @Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fullv described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a plan view of a blank. from which the envelop is made Fig. 2 is a-view of theenvelop made up and ready to receive its contents; Fig. 3 is a rear View of the envelop closed and sealed, and lFig. 4 is a vertical seetion taken on the plane indicated by yhe line 4 4 in Fig. 3.

The envelop comprises a front or body portion 1, two side er end flaps 2 and top and bottom Flaps 3, 4. on its inner face around its edge with a coating of gum or the like 9 which is adapted to unite it to the outerfaees of the side or end flaps 2 after the latter have been folded over upon the front .1. The shape of the tongues or extensions 2a on the flaps 2.and the arrangement of the curved slot 8 is such that when the envelop is made up.; ready for use, as shown in Fig. 2, the tonguesor extensions 2a are disposed beneath the slot 8 and the central portion of the Hap 4 to form a guard to protect the contents C of the en l velop. lt will he noted that the Width of the .xpper flap 3 and itstongue5 is such that when the latter` is inserted in the slot 8 it will just reach to the bottom edges of the extensions or tongues 2a on the ilaps 2 and therefore be prevented from coming in contact with and adhering to the contents `of the envelop but that the small safety sealing tongue 6 :will project beyond. the bottom edges of the tongues or extensions 2a and will adhere to the contents so that the latter cannot be removed without destroying' said tongue G. ln making up the envelop, the side or end flaps 2 are folded over upon. the front 1 and the bottom flap 4 is then folded up and glued to the ilaps 2, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

ln using the envelop the contents C is placed therein and the gum 7 on the flap 3 is moistened and the latter is 'then folded I down and its tongues 6, 5 passed through the slot 8. The tongue 5 will 'adhere to the extensions or tongues 2a on the end flaps2 to more ell'eetively unite the latter, and at the saine time said tongues or extensions 2a will prevent the tongue 5 from contacting with the contents ol' the envelop. The small tongue 5, however, will adhere to the letter or other contents of the envelop and will ve'ry likely be torn when the flap 3 is surreptitimisly opened; and it will therefore be j'naetiealiy impossible for the contents to be replaced and the flap 3 rosea-led Without the envelop showing evidences of having4 been tampered With The tongue 5 being sealed beneath the flap 4 cannot be moistend and opened without detection as may the sealing tongue ol' an ordinary envelop.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the improved. envelop is very similar to an ordinary envelop and may be as quickly eut, gummed and made up as the latter. The curvature of the slot 8 permits the tongue 5 to be readily inserted in the same and the engagement-oi said tongue -5 with the eX- ap of anordin'ary envelop. The simplicity Vfeature isnot desiredI the i'lap tensions 2a onthe-'laps 2 causes the latter to be 'more effectively united and hence renders the .envelop stronger. When the safety 3 may be sealed on 'the outside the same as the sealing ofthe envelop renders it -inexpensive to produce "and 'eas -to seal and'at the same time. it is practica y impossiblezto obtain access to the'contents of the envelop without de.- tection. y A
